Documenta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This first documenta was - in contrast to most expectations - a considerable success as it featured most of the artists which are nowadays generally considered to have had a significant influence on modern art, e.g.
The more recent documentas feature art from all continents; nonetheless most of it is site-specific.
The documenta is perceived to be one of the world's most important art exhibitions.

50 years at the cutting edge of art - Germany's documenta
When the documenta first opened its doors to the public on July 15, 1955, it was a sideshow to the federal garden exhibition in the modest central town of Kassel.
The documenta truly left its mark on the town in 1982 when Germany's Joseph Beuys had 7,000 oak trees planted in Kassel in a symbolic act of afforestation.
The documenta courted controversy in 1992 by declaring a shed containing a portable toilet to be a work of art.

Documenta is definitely a major deal, but the Venice Biennale, with its national pavilions, is more like the Olympics of art.
Documenta is a European phenomena, and no one except Europeans (mostly Germans) and those in the US who harbor dipshit Euro pretenses care a tinkers about what goes on at Documenta.
Documenta may not show anything that inspires you, fashion in art as anywhere may seem like a bitch, fashion is ridiculous, fashion is everywhere; you're an artist, you try to develop something true, everybody else just wants to see the latest thing.

With this project, the documenta enters into a dialogue with those journals across the world that are important to its work.
The project is not about a theoretical self-appraisal carried out by documenta 12 itself, but rather about the process of developing the theories of the documenta and juxtaposing these with ideas currently circulating in the art discourse and among artists in the international, local or other specific contexts.
Particularly interesting here are the long-term effects of the project well beyond the period of documenta 12 itself, such as the development of sustainable information infrastructures, databases and other communication tools.

Documenta 12 artistic director Roger Buergel and curator Ruth Noack.
In a series of not-exactly-illuminating lectures and discussions, Buergel has given the impression that Documenta 12 will be characterized by an all-too-total return to the local, in distinct contrast to the global wanderlust that characterized Okwui Enwezor’s Documenta 11, five years ago.
The first surprise was the presentation of a new Documenta logo, which is adorned with sign for the number 12 done in scribbled hatchmarks, as well as with the name of the city, Kassel, and the dates of the show, 6/16-9/23/2007.
