Dodecanol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dodecanol, also known by its IUPAC name 1-dodecanol or dodecan-1-ol, and by its trivial name dodecyl alcohol and lauryl alcohol, is a fatty alcohol.
(CH Dodecanol is a colourless, water insoluble solid of melting point 24-27 °C and boiling point 260-262 °C. It has a floral odor.
Dodecanol is used to make surfactants, lubricating oils, and pharmaceuticals.

Coadsorption of Tri-chain Surfactants and Dodecanol at a Hydrophobic Surface Studied by Sum-Frequency Spectroscopy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
As the tri-chain concentration increases, adsorbed dodecanol is gradually displaced by the tri-chain surfactant.
At a concentration of one third of the tri-chain critical micelle concentration (cmc), when the dodecanol coverage is approximately two-thirds of a full monolayer, the tri-chain has the same packing density as in the absence of dodecanol.
The structure of the tri-chain and dodecanol surfactants in the mixed film is similar to that in the pure tri-chain and dodecanol monolayers, with the tri-chain showing significant conformational disorder in contrast to the highly orientated dodecanol.

 Patent 6,344,211
This deficiency restricts the use of dodecanol in polymeric matrices because the release rate of a substance from polymer matrices is the higher, easier it can diffuse, in as the matrix.
Accordingly it is the object of the present invention to improve the release of auxiliary agents which are solid at room temperature from a matrix.
In the present case, an auxiliary agent must be introduced that increases the absorption of medicinal agents by the skin, is solid at room temperature, and forms subcooled melts, for example, dodecanol or levulic acid.

Phase Transitions in Mixed Monolayers of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Dodecanol at the Air/Water Interface   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A two-dimensional phase transition has been studied in a mixed monolayer of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecanol at the air/water interface by sum-frequency spectroscopy and ellipsometry.
At low temperatures, a monolayer at the surface of a 6 mM solution containing 99.9% SDS and 0.1% dodecanol (w/w) is conformationally ordered and has a surface coverage comparable to that of a monolayer of pure dodecanol at the same temperature.
The solid phase contains equimolar amounts of SDS and dodecanol while the liquid phase contains SDS and dodecanol in a ratio of approximately 3:2.

EFFECT OF DODECANOL CONTENT ON THE COMBUSTION OF METHANOL SPRAY FLAMES - Begell House Inc.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The relatively large volatility difference between methanol and dodecanol provided an opportunity to examine the occurrence of microexplosions within spray flames.
Evidence of microexploded droplets was revealed by a sudden decrease in droplet size and velocity, and an increase in number density at different spatial positions within the flame.
On this basis, results were obtained that indicated the occurrence of microexplosions in the 75/25 mixture flame, but at a reduced extent as compared to prior results reported for methanol flames containing a larger fraction of dodecanol.

 Tim Davey: Surfactant chemist
Above the cmc, dodecanol has little influence on the surface aggregate structure, probably because dodecanol is partitioned into the bulk micelles.
Below the cmc, dodecanol causes a transition from hemicylindrical aggregates to a two-phase mixture in which flat sheets coexist with swollen hemicylindrical aggregates.
Under conditions where hemicylinders and flat sheets coexist, an increase in bulk dodecanol concentration results in an increase in surface coverage by nat sheets.

Nonanesthetic Alcohols Dissolve in Synaptic Membranes without Perturbing Their Lipids -- Miller et al. 86 (3): 1084 -- ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Here we show that both the anesthetic dodecanol and the nonanesthetic tetradecanol are taken up equally well into the tissues of animals and into isolated postsynaptic membranes.
When a group of Rana pipiens tadpoles were treated with dodecanol, half were anesthetized by 4.7 µ M (free aqueous concentration), and the corresponding concentration in the tissues was found to be 0.4 mmol per kg wet weight.
The lipid order parameter it reported was decreased by the anesthetic alcohols (octanol, decanol, and dodecanol), whereas the nonanesthetic alcohols either did not change it significantly (tetradecanol) or actually increased it (hexadecanol and octadecanol).
