Dodge Charger Concept Car For 2006
A Hemi-powered Dodge Charger like this concept by Kris Horton could easily be produced on the upcoming rear-wheel drive LX platform.
When Dodge unveiled its Charger concept car in 1999, it was the topic of much speculation and media attention.
But at Dodge, the official plan to market the four-door Magnum wagon to active, often-single males is hard to swallow; we feel most of the males in this category would be considering the new Mustang, the new GTO or possibly a C6 Corvette (not to mention the 300C).

Dodge was going to restyle their entire B-body lineup for 1968 and decided that it was time to seperate the Coronet and Charger models further.
A new trim line was added to the Charger — R/T. This stood for Road and Track and would be the performance badge that would establish Dodge's performance image.

The Charger car gets new sheetmetal, an even more aggressively designed Dodge grille and front profile, some muscular body-side contours and, while retaining the LX platform's four-door architecture, the Charger gets a new coupe-like roofline.
Chrysler's rear-drive LX platform produced home runs in its first two at-bats with the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Magnum.
To its credit, Chrysler didn't just do some minor fascia changes to bring the famed Charger muscle car nameplate back to showrooms after a 27-year absence.

Dodge Challenger concept: 1970 all over - Jan. 4, 2006
In June 2005, a report in the industry newspaper Automotive News said that Chrysler was working on a two-door car, to be called the Challenger, based on the same engineering underpinnings, called the LX platform, as the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300.
The Dodge Charger was ripped by some because it was a four-door sedan, a nod to practicality seen as out-of-place in a car that carried the name of one of the most famous muscle car lines.
As soon as images of the Charger were released to the public, letters of complaint started coming into DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group headquarters in Detroit.

Popular Mechanics - Re: 2009 Dodge Challenger
The new Challenger is said to ride on an updated version of the LX rear-wheel drive platform--the same one that currently underpins the Charger and Chrysler 300.
Dodge actually admitted that the only reason they used the name Charger was that it did the best in name vs brand recognition.
Dodge, no doubt taken aback by the overwhelming success of the 2006 Ford Mustang, apparently sees fit to repeat history and resurrect the Challenger nameplate to once again pursue its arch rival.

In 2006 we will know if that LX platform (the basis for the Chrysler 300, the Dodge Magnum and Charger) is a long-term winner or merely the object of a passing fad.
The Dodge Ram and Dakota pickups and the Dakota SUV are doing OK in a competitive market, and one in which consumers are showing a little resistance to larger trucks.

Chrysler May Need Another LX Plant
Chrysler has “interest” in building more variants off the LX platform beyond the 300, Magnum and upcoming Dodge Charger, says Craig Love, vice president of Chrysler’s rear-wheel-drive product team.
If demand for the current LX vehicles remains strong as plans for the new variants are finalized, the auto maker may have to look at adding another assembly plant to the mix.
Brampton’s manufacturing system is set up to accommodate up to three variants of the LX platform, along with the ability to pilot-build a fourth model.

 Chrysler Firepower Concept:
The Firepower just looks more like my idea of a modern Charger than the brick on the LX platform - but that's just me. Ideally, I say call the LX version a Coronet and make a 2+2 Dodge version (2 doors and a back seat) of the Firepower called the Hemi Charger.
Granted, it's probably out of the price range for most of the Charger LX market.
Firepower uses massive billet aluminum wheels measuring 19x12 inches in the front and 20x12 inches in the rear.

Dodge Charger Concept Car For 2006
As we now know, Daimler Chrysler was well along in its LX platform development, and the Charger show car could well have given product planners the public mandate they needed for the impressive bill of materials already coveted by engineers.
Chrysler's LX variant, known as the 300C, has a sedan roofline.
This should prove to be one of the keys to the LX platform's future sales success in the mid-lux market, but buyers have been famously picky in this segment.

American Motors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AMC's technologically advanced Bramalea Assembly and Stamping Plants in Ontario (recently completed at the the time of the Chrysler takeover) are still active, and now produce the best-selling LX-cars - the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, and the Chrysler 300.
AMC's Toledo, Ohio plants continue to turn out Jeep Wranglers and Libertys as well as parts and components for Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles (although Toledo Machining and Forge is slated for closure as of 2005).
AMC is generally thought of as the brand used for all American Motors passenger cars following the demise of Rambler, but the names "American Motors" and "AMC" seem to have been used interchangeably in corporate literature and on the cars themselves well into the 1980s.

Popular Mechanics - Re: 2009 Dodge Challenger
While I, personally, like the new LX platform vehicles, I do not believe the wagon should have been called a Magnum or the sedan called a Charger.
Either they completely destroy any spec of respect that the old car has by slapping a nameplate of an old awesome car on a new (basically unrelated) car [exactly what they did to the charger].
Or they make a clone of the old car, and destroy any diginity in the old one [exactly what they are goin to do to the challenger].

Inside Line: Detroit Show: Chrysler Imperial Will Be Born Again at 2006 NAIAS -
While Chrysler has prepared its Challenger and Imperial show cars off the LX architecture that underpins the 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, the production versions of these cars would use the LY platform, the basis for replacements of the LX cars.
Imperial was a name Chrysler used periodically for top-of-the-line sedans from 1926 and 1993.
The idea behind the new Imperial is to start with a Chrysler 300 sedan, keep the philosophy and the proportions, change the sheet metal, and make the wheelbase longer.

In the spring of 2004 Chrysler introduced their LX platform, which serves as the base for a new line of rear-wheel drive, V8-powered cars (using the new Hemi®-engine), including a four-door version of the Dodge Charger.
Another possible platform that has been mentioned is the Subaru B9 Scrambler, but what most people seem to think that the most likley choise is the new GM Delta platform.
On April 6, 2004 AutoWeek wrote that a new Saab will be based on the GM Kappa platform, but that would be difficult to adapt to front wheel drive.

 Chrysler on the Rebound
LaSorda refuses to confirm how many new products will roll out of Chrysler plants in 2005, although a new C-segment replacement for the Neon is a given, as well as another variant from the 300 Series LX RWD platform, the Dodge Charger.
LaSorda says it will be difficult for the perennial efficiency leaders, Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., to maintain their standing at approximately 32 hours per vehicle in the coming year as they launch new plants and models in the U.S. That should make it easier for Chrysler to close the gap.
LaSorda says Chrysler remains on track to meets its efficiency targets, although he adds it may be difficult to show significant gains next year because of the aggressive new-product launch schedule.
