M-bodies: Dodge Diplomat, Plymouth Gran Fury, and others
The Dodge Diplomat and Chrysler LeBaron were first introduced in 1977, the first two nameplates on a body style that would be little changed for all of its twelve years.
The Diplomat's predecessor, the F body, failed to catch on right away as a police cruiser because of its interior space; full size cars such as the Fury and St. Regis were in common use when it was introduced.
Dodge seemed to recognize the police car stigma of the Diplomat's appearance, and countered with the J body offerings (Mirada, Cordoba) which more easily could be seen as trying to remind someone of the glorious days of the cars like the Dodge Charger and Plymouth Barracuda, however there really was not much of a comparison.

Dodge Diplomat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dodge Diplomat was a mid-size car and it was manufactured from 1977 to 1989 by the Chrysler Corporation's Dodge brand and practically identical to the Chrysler LeBaron of 1977, the Plymouth Caravelle sold in Canada, and the Plymouth Gran Fury from 1982.
Following the demise of the Dodge St. Regis in 1981, the Diplomat remained, becoming the largest sedan in the Dodge lineup, despite being a mid-size.
Diplomats built from mid-1988 until the end of production were among the first Chrysler-built products to have a driver's side airbag as standard equipment, some two model years before the remainder of Chrysler's lineup.

Dodge Dynasty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dodge Dynasty, was a front-wheel drive sedan that was introduced in 1987 as a 1988 model to replace the Diplomat as Dodge's mid-size car.
The twin to the Dodge Dynasty was the Chrysler New Yorker; both cars were built on the Chrysler C platform.
The Dynasty was replaced by the new-for-1993, cab-forward Dodge Intrepid.

 Dodge Diplomat - Wikicars
Throughout 80s, the Diplomat would eventually become the darling of the police and taxi fleets throughout the U.S. An interesting fact about the Diplomat (and LeBaron) is that they were known as M-bodies, whereas the Aspen and Volare were F-bodies, even though they shared the exact same platform.
Dodge introduced an SE package this year, which included the Chrysler Fifth Avenue's front end, but had a crossbar in the grille (actually a sign of things to come for Dodge, as all Dodge models today use that same crossbar grille design in some shape or form).
Dodge introduced the K-car based Dynasty this year, which would eventually become the Diplomat's successor (at least in spirit), although Dodge did not offer a police package on the Dynasty.

The Dodge Diplomat was really known as a reliable and durable car, surviving 12 years in the market with only a few yearly changes.
But the Dodge Diplomat as a model, and not as a trim, was introduced by Chrysler in 1977.
But during the time when the Dodge Diplomat was manufactured, power was not the number one criterion for selecting a car because of the oil crisis that hit the country.

 1978 Dodge Diplomat
Dodge's Diplomat is a difficult car to classify.
Diplomat's driving quality is somewhere between the excellent handling and feel of General Motor's new downsized intermediates and the overly soft feel of the big intermediate sedans from both Ford and Chrysler.
Diplomat is no sports car, but its steering is light and precise.
