Dodo Marmarosa, early Bebop pianist -- Rest in Peace
Dodo Marmarosa, a jazz pianist who became known as an early master of bebop's harmonic complexity and then vanished from the scene, died on Sept. 17 at a hospital in Pittsburgh.

Marmarosa's recorded legacy was enough to secure him, as the critic Leonard Feather put it, "a small but significant place" in jazz history.

Jazz Institute of Chicago > Jazz Institute of Chicago - Jazz Articles > Dodo Marmarosa: The Chicago Connection
Dodo (Michael) Marmarosa was one of the early bop pioneers, a classically trained pianist, who during a very short period became a fixture in the new music scene.
In 1947 Marmarosa was chosen as the most promising jazz pianist by Esquire, from a group that included Miles Davis, Sonny Stitt, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson and Sarah Vaughan.
Along the way, the work of Dodo Marmarosa has been lost in the shuffle, but is also very much an integral small part in the evolution of jazz.

'Dodo' was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. on December 12, 1925 and there studied classical piano from the age of nine.
Marmarosa was one of THE pianists in the early days of bebop, after Clyde Hart, Monk and Bud Powell - 'Dodo" is usually mentioned in the same breath as George Wallington, Al Haig and Joe Albany.
DODO'S BOUNCE on Fresh Sound has the 1947 trio tracks he did with Barney Kessel and Gene Englund, a number of solo piano tracks including "Tone Paintings I" and "Tone Paintings II", tracks under Lucky Thompson's name including "Bopmatism" and the 1947 Dial trio date that has Harry Babison doubling bass and cello (a first?).

The legendary but troubled bop pianist Dodo Marmarosa recorded very little after the late 1940s (other than a few dates in the early 1960s), and he has a relatively slim discography for a player of his stature.
The bulk of the release is taken from a 1958 live trio date in which Marmorosa is joined by a couple of local Pittsburgh musicians, bassist Danny Matri and drummer Henry Sciullo.
An extra bonus are the extensive liner notes, which include a 1995 interview with Marmarosa, plus the decision to lead off the CD with a brief excerpt from the talk.

One part classical music boy wonder, one part Art Tatum reincarnated in a tiny, hawk-nosed Italian kid, Marmarosa burst onto the jazz scene in the mid-'40s, playing his way through a spate of legendary bands and recording configurations before heading back to his native Pittsburgh and self-imposed obscurity ever since.
Much of his legendary status derives from the fact that he was Charlie Parker's piano man of choice on all his legendary Dial sessions and, indeed, the young Marmarosa could keep up with Bird when Miles Davis was still struggling.
But the musical schizophrenia between his classical flights of fancy and his ties to both bop and the older style of Tatum is on open display in every one of these tracks.

 Dodo Marmarosa: 1925-2002
Michael ‘Dodo’ Marmarosa was a reclusive personality who flitted in and out of jazz history after making an initial but lasting impact as one of the progenitors of bebop in the mid to late 1940s.
He was given the rather unflattering nickname of Dodo because of his large head and short body as a child.
In recent years Marmarosa was resident in a medical centre in Pittsburgh, where he occasionally played piano and organ for other residents and guests.

There were more obscure tracks on Atomic '46, Jazz Showcase, Live Dodo on Swing House, trio tracks on Phoenix House (later on Fresh Sound CD Dodo's Bounce), four trio tracks on Savoy '50.
The melodic inventiveness in his right hand was unique; with Al Haig he was one of the first white pianists to be recognized as an innovator in bop.

For me, Michael "Dodo" Marmarosa is a less well known but quintessential example of this exotic breed of musician, deeply gifted and almost as deeply flawed.
There are solo exhibitions of his Tatum-esque technical bravura ("Tea for Two") and impressionistic classicism ("Tone Paintings") as well as a generous helping of his trio work with West Coast stalwarts, bassist Harry Babasin (actually a plucked cello pioneer in these 1947 recordings) and drummer Jackie Mills.

Regarding Dodo's playing - he's not really like Al Haig - he's a nice "percussive" player, a bebopper - several people that come to mind in listening to him are Chicagoan Eddie Higgins and also Eddie Costa - but that's just a real quick and maybe hasty "loose association".

This CD (which completely reissues a double LP with the same title) is a bit unusual for it teams together the great tenor Gene Ammons with the very talented (but now obscure) bop pianist Dodo Marmarosa whose mental problems kept him from pursuing his career.

Kicking off with a pair of solo tracks ("Tea for Two" and "Deep Purple"), one can clearly hear that while he lacked some of Tatum's complexities, Marmarosa's instincts for phrasing and clear execution are on a par with his mentor.
