Dodo Marmarosa : Pittsburgh 1958 - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
All of the music on this 1997 CD was previously unissued, and it is a major find.
The legendary but troubled bop pianist Dodo Marmarosa recorded very little after the late 1940s (other than a few dates in the early 1960s), and he has a relatively slim discography for a player of his stature.
The bulk of the release is taken from a 1958 live trio date in which Marmorosa is joined by a couple of local Pittsburgh musicians, bassist Danny Matri and drummer Henry Sciullo.

Harry Babasin & the Jazzpickers - Free Music Downloads, Videos, Lyrics, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The band was the brainchild of Harry Babasin, who was considered one of the first jazz cellists.
His pizzicato solo on a 1947 side by pianist Dodo Marmorosa may be the first such cello chilling on a jazz record.
Although the name of the band might suggest some kind of hillbilly jazz fusion, in reality, the Jazzpickers was nothing of the sort.

 Jazz > Swing > Saxophone
While Lester Young's great tenor sax playing is featured throughout, the set would be worth while just for the galaxy of other players.
On piano, for instance, you can hear Basie, Teddy Wilson, Nat King Cole, and Dodo Marmorosa.
This is a must for the serious jazz listener, but it is also worth considering for those who only want some good jazz as background listening.

 Jazz Standards: A Foggy Day
Clarinetist and band leader Artie Shaw loved numbers written by top songwriters like George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter.
Always looking ahead, Shaw assembled a killer big band following World War II that included jazz great Roy Eldridge on trumpet and young lions Barney Kessel on guitar and Dodo Marmorosa on piano.
As jazz became more complex during the beginnings of the bebop era, Shaw quickly embraced the style, and elements of it crept into his playing, as evidenced on his record of “A Foggy Day,” which also has solos by Eldridge, Kessel and Marmorosa.

 The BeBop Repertory Quintet
An incredibly facile pianist, Martin has worked with such luminaries as Peanuts Hucko, Scoft Hamilton and Kenny Ball.
A world authority on the work of Jelly Roll Morton, Martin has also made detailed studies of the styles of, to name a few, Earl Hines, Teddy Wison, Art Tatum, Dodo Marmorosa and Bud Powell, and thus is the only serious choice when it comes to the thorny subject of the music of the 'Transition'.
The music played in our recital attempts to give a flavour of the mottled background from which bebop in its pure form finally arose.
