The dog tax [Hundesteuer] is not collected to clean up dog poop, it's there to "keep the number of dogs low." Cleaning up is technically the responsibility of the dog owners, who are threatened with fines in many Hundeverordnungen if they don't.
The tax issue leads to a slightly larger point: you'd think that the Hundesteuer is there to pay for the dog poop cleanup -- but that's naive -- it's like believing they collect green taxes [Ökosteuer] to help the environment, when in reality they're collected to prop up the failing social security systems.

Kudos to WTVS, Detroit's public television station, for having the courage to air an unedited version of a controversial war documentary tonight at 10 p.m.

But, as reviewers and producers describe the documentary, its raw footage is exactly the view of war that the public needs as a counterweight to the sanitized snippets shown on nightly news.

Pence reasserts GOP tax-cut commitment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), the chairman of the Republican Study Group, yesterday sought to dispel suggestions that the Republican drive for tax cuts had petered out in the face of the budget deficit and insisted that the cuts remain at the top of the GOP agenda.
The congressman’s comments came on the heels of a Washington Post report contending that Republicans had more or less given up on making President Bush’s tax cuts permanent, and they appeared to be designed to dispel anxieties among conservatives that Republicans are abandoning their base.
Pence, one of a handful of members mentioned as a possible successor to Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), stressed that making the tax cuts permanent is the Republicans’ No. 1 priority after national security, “particularly in the area of death taxes.” “Death taxes” is many Republicans’ preferred term for estate taxes.
