Doggerel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Doggerel describes verse considered of little literary value.
Almost by definition examples of doggerel are not preserved, since if they have any redeeming value they are not considered doggerel.
Some poets however make a virtue of writing what appears to be doggerel but is actually clever and entertaining despite its apparent technical faults.

 Q&L/Musings Guest Essay
Doggerel is poetry that has not escaped the prosaic appeal to cognition: "It has a prose initiative, but tries to make itself associative by an act of will, and it reveals the same difficulties that great poetry has overcome at a subconscious level" (277).
Doggerel, in Butler's hands, is an astonishingly powerful mode of verse with which to skewer pretension, including snobbish attitudes about verse.
Since most doggerel has always been just as awful as the definitions and connotations of the term make it out to be, its disappearance from serious literature appears to be a kind of aesthetic achievement.

Doggerel is a form of comic verse, characterized by a loose structure and rhyme pattern that makes unlikely choices for humorous effect.
Perhaps the antic nature of the doggerel form is part of the problem here - it's hard to be memorable when stretching for rhymes like "fleas" and "sprees." Some of the vocabulary also seems a bit sophisticated for the target audience.
Though Doggerel is a worthy effort, it does fall short.

Tony Rogers' Inadvertent Doggerel is a celebration of a particular feature of Victorian literature — accidental trash poetry.
Ever since that suggestion on the front page of Issue 3, Bikwilians everywhere have rallied to the cause of de-closeting and dusting off the hopeless rhymes of their youth and at last getting them into print, even if (or, more like it, mainly because) they discharge this heavy duty anonymously.
Spike Milligan, himself no stranger to the writing of doggerel, has over the years been more than happy to recite McGonagall at the drop of a manic hat, and indeed in 1974 co-wrote and starred as the poet in a 95-minute TV special called The Great McGonagall.
