 Mifune: Dogma 95
According to the ten strict rules of Dogma 95, drawn up four years ago by Danish directors Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, the music has to be recorded along with the images.
Most of Kragh-Jacobsen's film was shot in six weeks on an abandoned farm situated on the featureless flatness of Denmark's southernmost island.
The film unit slept in caravans and the cast brought their own clothes to wear on camera.

'Dogma': 2 Fallen Angels Want Back In
The premise of "Dogma," which suggests that Smith might have been as shrewd a lawyer as he is a filmmaker, is that the church re-dedication will allow the banished angels to re-enter heaven, thus proving God fallible and, by extension, negating all existence.
The film's real center is a heroine named Bethany, apparently first written as an ingenue and made a lot more interesting by the world-weary presence of Linda Fiorentino.
"Dogma," which is as frank-talking as Smith's other films, and which culminates in some violence, will be shown Monday night and Tuesday as part of the 37th New York Film Festival before opening commercially next month.

Having the characters' inner lives justify the plot is too complicated [ … ] the superficial movies are receiving all the praise." The Manifesto of the Dogme 95 brotherhood (mainly Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg) is both Ludditical and puritanical, a northern reformation unimaginable in the sunny, catholic south (including Southern California).
Dogme films succeed because the three elements on which they are built — characters, places, story (a mixture of "you can't lie your way out of your past" and "you can't escape your inner self") — combine seamlessly with the filmmaking technique.
Filmed in an anything can happen, let ’er rip documentary style, the camera, not merely shaky but positively Parkinsonian, tracks poor Rosetta's quotidian struggle for life and a job, but from the opening credits her destiny is fixed.

Yes it is. He originally planned to film Dogma second, immediately after Clerks, but it was decided that Dogma was too good a movie to be wasted on a follow-up effort that would most likely receive critical bashing when compared to Clerks.
There were things I appreciated about the film, such as the critique of capitalism in the portrayal of the worship of "the golden calf." That's in the sequence when the two fallen angels go into the boardroom of Mooby enterprises and challenge the corporation's executives about their immorality and hypocrisy.
EC: I thought the film ultimately had a fairly conservative religious message that was conveyed at the end of the film when God appeared and tidily restored everything, effectively erasing all the damage and bloodshed enacted by God's creation (both humans and angels).

He's far happier with his current film, Mifune, an amusing romantic comedy about the three-way relationship of a disillusioned Copenhagen yuppie, his "mentally challenged" brother, and the hooker-with-a-heart-of-Snow-White who comes to be a housekeeper for their messy farmhouse.
Mifune is also "Dogma 3," the third film to adhere to Lars von Trier's call for a stripped-down approach with handheld camera and natural light.
He was brought into the Dogma fold by the two Danes, Vinterberg and Trier, because he was their professor at the Danish Film School.

Dogma Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"Chasing Amy", his third film, was a well-written and insightful piece that detailed the unlikely courtship of a hetero- male and a lesbian, upending expectations and the conventions of your average romantic comedy at every turn.
As opposed to being a savage attack on the Church, "Dogma" is a film that indirectly celebrates faith by poking fun at some of the Church's institutions, while at the same time asking questions on some of the deeper issues of Catholic ideology.
However, in the case of "Dogma", it seems that Smith focused more on the religious bantering at the expense of keeping the audience interested-- the metaphysical and religious rhetoric overpower everything else in the film, and the result is very drawn-out and dry.

Dogma (1999): Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock - PopMatters Film Review
Indeed, Smith's film is a veritable slackfest of Gen-Xy angelic types who shuffle their way towards the apocalypse with cynicism and an exhausted irony.
When prodded about their objection to the film, these protesters will merely respond that it is blasphemous (apparently tautology is all the rage in Catholicism today: it is blasphemy because it is blasphemous), making it abundantly clear that they have absolutely no idea what the film is about, or how the narrative plays itself out.
Dogma is, in the end, a direct affirmation of faith rather than its rejection, and in this respect the film's controversy merely repeats the mis-informed, or uncritical, public reactionism which has surrounded any film in recent memory which has tried to address sticky issues of Catholic faith.

Direct Dogma: Film Manifestos and the fin de siècle
Further, film manifestos can be seen as constituting the earliest form of film theory; for instance, Ricciotto Canudo's 'Manifesto for the Sixth Art' in many ways marks the beginnings of a theory of radical film practice[2].
Yet, it is the 'Vow of Chastity', attached to the manifesto itself that shifts the dogma of Dogma away from the manifestos of the past.
Furthermore, by embedding within the modernist film manifesto a profound sense of irony, the Dogma brothers have revitalized, for a short while, the notion of the film manifesto and its function with both the cinema and the public sphere.

Dogma jokes liberally and the storyline's "what ifs" are a bit preposterous, but embedded within the movie are serious ideas with which Smith hopes to engage the audience.
That's why the film frequently seems to bog down in tangents that go nowhere (especially the trip to a corporation's headquarters, the rampage of the shit monster, and the final action sequences).
As it is, I'm personally willing to overlook some of the film's obvious problems and take it as an act of faith that Dogma is one of the most intelligent, engaging, and gut-bustingly funny revelations to come along in a while.

While some were blasting writer/director Smith’s film (and oeuvre) for being nothing more than mindless juvenile hijinks (and to be fair, there is a poop monster), others were damning it for its audacity to make fun of the Catholic Church and turn Christian theology on its head.
But the reason that Dogma works so well as a film, and not just a brilliant script caught on tape, is its evocation of an atmosphere where the commonplace and divine exist hand-in-hand.
Dogma’s emphasis on debate, rather than absolute answers, is at the core of Smith’s approach to faith.

The Dogma collective certifies films which submit to a "vow of chastity" -- promising not to use artificial sound, light or props, filming only with a hand-held camera and avoiding "superficial action" like murders or use of weapons.
Scherfig said improvisation was part of the reason why her Dogma movie was so much more light-hearted than many of its dark and brooding predecessors like THE IDIOT directed by Lars von Trier, who broke away from the genre last year with his DANCER IN THE DARK starring Icelandic pop singer Bjork.

But when the documentary was dropped at the last minute (reportedly over objections from Buena Vista, who licensed the film to Columbia for DVD release), there wasn't time to go back and recompress the deleted scenes at a higher bit rate to make them look better.

It's too bad, because Dogma is ripe for near-classic status in its theological satire, which is hardly as blasphemous as the protests that greeted the movie would lead you to believe.
In some ways Dogma is a shaggy dog of a road movie--which hits a comic peak when Affleck and Fiorentino banter drunkenly on a train to New Jersey, not realizing they're mortal enemies--and segues into a comedy-action flick as the vengeful angels (who have a taste for blood) try to make their way into heaven.
