A growing number of members of parliament from the Welfare Party's DYP coalition partner responded by putting an end to their cooperation with Welfare, with the result that on 30 May 1997 the coalition lost its parliamentary majority and Erbakan tendered his resignation under pressure from the army.
The FP (Fazilet Partisi — Virtue Party), a pro-Islamic party established immediately after the Welfare Party was banned in January 1998, took third place (15,2%).
