The current airport handles 4.2 million passengers per year, whereas the new airport will be able to handle 12.5 million per year after the first phase of construction.
The airport is to be constructed near the city of Doha and, when finished, will be approximately two-thirds the size of the city.
The contract for the first phase of the airport construction and the planning and design phase was awarded to Bechtel Group Inc. The project started in early 2004 with a detailed planning and design phase and Bechtel produced a Master Plan of the new airport.

Whilst the airport is generally clean, with a good duty free section, it is a bit on the small side for the number of passengers that use it.
I've seen Doha intl airport from the days when it was like a third class airport with absolutely no exclusive facilities like its counterparts in Dubai and Beirut, but over the last year I think that the airport has changed its image rather significantly.
