About Sumo / Chiyonofuji / Chiyotaikai / Terao by Thomas Staedeli
The dohyo is 18 feet square and 2 feet high and is constructed of a special kind of clay.
Over the dohyo suspended from the ceiling by cables is a roof resembling a Shinto shrine with four giant tassels hanging from each corner to signify the seasons of the year.
The rikishi climb into the dohyo and go through a short ritual ancient in sumo tradition after which they depart to be followed by the other team entering from the opposite aisle to repeat the ritual.

These motions are the same as one does when entering the grounds of a temple: raising the arms shows you have no concealed weapons, clapping hands signifies spirits and bodies are purified, and hitching up the apron frightens away evil spirits, as well as signifying a wrestler's intention to win the match.
The dohyo is a raised platform of tampered earth and forms a 20 foot square.
Embedded in the earth of the dohyo are bundles of rice and straw--forming a circle about 15 feet in diameter.

For the first half of the day, young, thin men often with their hair loose climb upon the dohyo in an almost empty and dark arena and clash.

In the center of the dohyo are buried six things: torreya nuts, washed rice, chestnuts, kelp, squid and salt.

Sumo tournaments were once again performed for the pleasure of the gods, and the rituals which still mark every bout of every tournament became institutions.
Konishiki's sumo was also lacking in grace; the rikishi himself described his technique as "strictly offensive." As the largest sumo wrestler in the recorded history of the sport, Konishiki won when he was able to square up an opponent and drive him straight down or back.
Konishiki's successful opponents were able to avoid such direct confrontation -- not an easy task given the confines of the dohyo and the importance of a strong tachi-ai, but well in reach of the more talented wrestlers.

Seelye: I think the original reason of the elevated dohyo is for audiences to see sumo matches easily, just like the same reason for the elevated stages for boxing matches, wrestling matches, theatrical plays or music performances in the open flat space.
The elevated dohyo make them a lot easier for rikishi to role to avoid injuries than hit the flat surface of dohyo.
I have seen several rikishi injure >themselves in falling off the dohyo, ie Wakanohana, Mitoi, Tomonohana, and >it would seem that if the dohyo was level with the floor, that we would >have fewer injuries and more exciting sumo.
