  Romania - Securitate - Doina Cornea - Worldpress.org
For Doina Cornea, the roots of her misadventures with the Securitate lie in an epiphany that happened during a visit to Strasbourg, France, in 1965.
In the meantime, Doina Cornea’s letters were being widely disseminated in the Western press, which helped protect her from the anger of Ceausescu and the Securitate.
Headlines in government-owned newspapers would read "Doina Cornea Wants to Sell the Country to Foreigners," or "Doina Cornea Has Bought the Dacia Automobile Plant," or "Doina Cornea Is Trying to Starve the Workers." In Bucharest, a woman who could have been her double was violently attacked.

Doina is also the title of one of the most important poems by Mihai Eminescu, probably the best-known and most influential Romanian poet.

Robert Garfias Doina Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Although the doina as it is performed today is distinctively Romanian in character, it is significant that the area in which it survives today, with the exception of Maramures, represents that part of Romania in which the Turkish influence was strongest.
While the actual origins of the doina remain of necessity unclear, a certain amount of Turkish influence is evident and undeniable in spite of the current Romanian policy which denies it.
While the doina itself regularly deals with the subject of love and longing in its texts, in the cîntec de dragoste this becomes the identifying focus of all the songs in the genre.
