Zen Center of Denver : Members Training
The purpose of dokusan is to discuss problems directly relating to your practice, to receive instruction in mindfulness training (and to report on the particular mindfulness efforts given), to demonstrate the results of work on your practice, and testing and validation of koan investigation.
Dokusan is offered by Danan Henry Roshi to all members at every sitting during the spring and fall training periods except when there is a teisho or a ceremony scheduled.
Dokusan is also conducted on Thursday evenings and Friday mornings during the summer and winter training periods, unless Roshi is out of town or a ceremony is scheduled.

Here is an opportunity to speak in a special place with a person who has traveled the spiritual path for many years, who has passed hundreds of koans, and who has the sanction as a teacher within a line that goes back more than a thousand years.
Still, dokusan is meant to be intense and on point.
On occasions when dokusan is offered, if you wish to see James you will be asked to place a card in front of your zabuton or chair.

There are two instances when you do not do this, when you are leaving to go to dokusan and when you are leaving during kinhin (bow as you step out of the line but not at the door.) In the Dojo.
The only exception to this is when you leave to go to dokusan, then your hands should be in gassho and your cushion under your arm.

Dokusan is the private interview in Zen practice between teacher and student.
What is said in dokusan should stay in the dokusan room; therefore very little is written about these interviews and transcriptions of actual dialogue are even rarer.
Admittedly, it is difficult to know whether these dialogues happened in the dokusan room or not (let alone whether they actually occurred as recorded) but some surely must have been recounted after the private interview.

 Dokusan
One important aspect of koan training is that a student must constantly go before his or her teacher in dokusan (interview, a process which in itself is good training).
In the breakthrough koan practice students must demonstrate the truth of the koan and can't merely present theories or ideas.
In subsequent koan practice there is a constant refining for there is always more to "not-do", yet not to leave undone.

Dokusan - A private interview between a student and a zen teacher or master.
Dokusan is a critical element of zen training and an important part of sesshin, though it is by no means limited to sesshin: some modern teachers have expanded the practice of dokusan to include communication by telephone and e-mail.
Those attending a sesshin are most aware of the jisha's role as the person who directs dokusan; the jisha announces when dokusan begins and guides students in and out.
