Dolby "B"'s premise was rather simple; record music with amplified high frequencies and during playback, reduce the high frequencies by the same value.
Dolby's reputation as a leader in audio technology was greatly enhanced in 1986 with the introduction of a powerful new system, Dolby SR (spectral recording), intended to bring analog recording into the digital age.

HeadWize - Technical Paper: Dolby Digital - The Sound of the Future Here Today by Dolby Labs
Dolby Digital audio technology has been providing multi-channel digital sound in cinemas since 1992, was launched in two-channel DBS applications in 1994, and first reached consumers via multichannel laser discs in early 1995.
Indeed, Dolby Laboratories' unique experience with audio noise reduction is essential to Dolby Digital's data rate reduction, as the fewer the bits used to describe an audio signal, the greater the quantizing noise that can exist.
Dolby noise reduction works by lowering the noise when no audio signal is present, while allowing strong audio signals to cover or mask the noise at other times.

 DOLBY NR
Dolby NR is used to reduce the amount of hiss on tapes that you record or play back.
During playback, Dolby NR reduces the decibel level of the same tones in the high end by 5 to 10 decibels, both the musical high end and the hiss.
Dolby C is able to cut hiss by 10-20 decibels, but there is a catch: You have to use better quality tape (dropouts sound WORSE using Dolby C, compared to Dolby B), and Dolby C tapes are not as compatible as Dolby B tapes when they are played in non-Dolby tape decks.
