Dolby Pro Logic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dolby Surround was originally developed by Dolby Laboratories in 1976 for analog cinema sound systems as Dolby Analog SR (Spectral Recording).
Dolby Surround is the encoding counterpart to Dolby Pro Logic's decoding technology, but early home implementations of Dolby Surround decoding went by the name Dolby Surround which can cause some confusion.
Dolby Surround and Dolby Pro Logic decoders are almost identical in practice, as both use Matrix technology to extract extra channels from stereo-encoded audio.

HeadWize - Technical Paper: Pro Logic Surround Decoder Principles of Operation by Roger Dressler
If you are familiar with the general principles of Dolby Surround, you may wish to scan ahead to Part 2 for the discussion of Pro Logic decoding.
Pro Logic is an active process designed to enhance sound localization through the use of high-separation decoding techniques.
To summarize, Pro Logic operates by continuously monitoring the encoded soundtrack, evaluating the inherent soundfield dominance, and applying enhancement in the same direction and in proportion to that dominance.

 Dolby Pro Logic explained
The Pro Logic encoding and decoding process ensures that noise levels (extraneous sounds not intended by the movie makers) are lowered when the audio signal is small or not present.
Dolby Surround technology may be found in amplifiers, receivers, separate decoders, and televisions from around forty manufacturers.
Pro Logic can also accept several speaker configurations, making it possible to get the highest performance in any system: left and right speakers create stereophonic effects, surround channel speakers add spatial depth and increase viewer involvement, the centre speaker gives precise sound positioning over a large viewing area.

A Listener's Guide to Dolby Pro Logic II
Pro Logic II is a dramatically improved, updated matrix surround system, based on the principles used to develop the original Dolby Pro Logic decoding back in the 1980s.
Pro Logic II further enhances the sound with a full-range stereo surround output and a greatly improved steering logic, resulting in high channel separation and an exceptionally stable soundfield.
Pro Logic II is available in standalone processors that can be added to existing car audio systems, or as a feature built into OEM and aftermarket car audio systems.

Pro Logic a lso supplies higher separation among all four channels and more accurate sound positioning, which along with the center channel enable a greatly expanded listening area.
Dolby Surround Pro Logic is the best way to accurately reproduce the Dolby Stereo the atre experience in your home and will ensure that you hear Dolby Surround soundtracks as the producer intended.
The Dolby 3 Stereo mode can be useful if you are unable to install surround speakers right away, and with a full surround system it may prove preferable for such program sources as synthesized "stereo" TV broadcasts or music recordings with vocal solos.

Stereo vs. Dolby Pro-Logic vs. Dolgy Digital (AC-3) vs. DTS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Dolby Pro-Logic is clever though because the signals indicating which sounds should come from which of the 5 or 6 speakers are 'hidden' in a regular stereo audio track and so regular stereo audio cables can be used and in fact Dolby Pro-Logic sound tracks can be recorded on VHS tapes.
If you have a receiver with a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, which means it can receive the digital information for all 6 channels of audio and decode which signal is for which speaker, you can buy a less expensive DVD player without a Dolby Digital encoder in it.
If you have a receiver that is described as 'Dolby Digital Ready' then it has 6 separate analog audio input connectors and you should buy a DVD with a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, which will have 6 separate analog audio output connectors to connect to the receiver.

 Dolby Pro Logic IIx
While Dolby's Cinema Matrix system, Dolby Stereo, and the consumer equivalent, Dolby Pro Logic, are not the only Matrix Surround Sound systems in the world, but they are arguably the best as evidenced by their commercial success.
This is the same principal as Dolby Digital EX, and in fact the same source track as a Dolby Digital EX soundtrack, only at decode time it uses DTS's own matrix technology to derive the trio of surround channels.
While inevitably all SSPs and Receivers will in time have Pro Logic IIx, the only consumers who might replace their hardware to get it would be those who have an obsession with using all their speakers all the time, or those who have to have the latest and greatest at any cost.

Rockford Fosgate First Manufacturer to License New Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Decoder
Dolby Pro Logic II bridges the gap between Pro Logic and discrete Dolby Digital 5.1-channel audio by presenting existing Dolby Surround encoded programs with a new sense of spatiality and directionality heretofore achieved only with discrete multichannel audio.
For the car audio environment with the Dolby Pro Logic II technology, the RFQ5000 will now allow for front/rear fader, or "panorama," mode as well as center image width control, which were not available with the original Pro Logic technology.
According to Dressler, the key to Pro Logic II is the first fundamentally new approach to matrix decoder design since the basic Scheiber model, still found at the core of every other active matrix surround decoding system, including Pro Logic.

Actually the CD does not need to be mastered for Pro Logic for the processor to work (the "surround" effect you are getting more often than not is a result of the decoder and not the encoder and decoder).
Pro Logic will do *something* to a 2-channel signal sent to it -- but that doesn't mean the source was mastered with Pro Logic processing in mind.
Pro Logic II, the successor to DPL, was designed *explicitly* to accept *any* two-channel stereo mix as input, and render it into a reasonable simulacrum of 5.1.

AudioEnz - Surround confusion! Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital and DTS explained   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
One of the main reasons for the success of Pro Logic is that all of the surround sound information was encoded (or matrixed) within a normal two-channel (stereo) soundtrack.
Unlike Pro Logic, the five main channels are full range, which means that they handle the complete range of sounds from 20Hz (very low bass) to 20kHz (very high treble).
Dolby Digital uses a means of compression to fit all six sound channels on to a DVD.

The Pro Logic decoder, a direct descendant of the cinema Dolby Stereo decoder, is best thought of as a passive decoder followed by an active matrix which provides directional enhancement though a constant power concept.
In Pro Logic II, the most significant technical difference from Pro Logic is that it incorporates a "feed back" design, in that the directional enhancements are applied back to the input of the active matrix.
