Topic: Dolby vs DTS

  Dolby Digital vs. DTS@Everything2.com
DTS - Digital Theatre Systems - is another compression and encoding system that debuted in 1993 with the film Jurassic Park, with the personal endorsement (and financial backing) of director Stephen Spielberg; all of his subsequent films and most of his previous films are commercially available with DTS soundtracks.
DTS was the first sound system to be completely digital from the encoding stage: for theatre applications the soundtrack is recorded onto two CDs that are played on hardware in the theatre, synchronised with the image using a time code along one edge of the film.
Dolby goes on to say that the previously-mentioned sine wave plot of DTS' LFE channel response was compared to the result of the same measurement taken from the Two Against Nature DVD, showing the two as identical (the combined plots were previously shown separately in the paper).

Dolby Laboratories - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dolby Stereo or simply Dolby Analog is the original analog optical technology developed for 35 mm prints and is encoded with four sound channels: Left/Center/Right (which are located behind the screen) and Surround (which is heard over speakers on the sides and rear of the theatre) for ambient sound and special effects.
Dolby Analog SR or simply Dolby SR (Spectral Recording) is a professional four-channel noise reduction system in use since 1986, which improves the dynamic range of analog recordings and transmissions by as much as 25 dB.
Dolby E is a professional coding system optimized for the distribution of surround and multichannel audio through two-channel postproduction and broadcasting infrastructures, or for recording surround audio on two audio tracks of conventional digital video tapes, video servers, communication links, switchers, and routers.

DTS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A modified time code is optically imaged on the film itself, and the DTS processor uses this to synchronize the soundtrack audio which is recorded in a compressed form on standard CD-ROM media (1.5 megabits/second).
DTS was first shown in the cinema with the release of Jurassic Park in 1993.
DTS is also the name often used for the 'Coherent Acoustics' codec which is used on DVDs, CDDAs and in wave files.

Dolby Digital EX is very similar in practice to Dolby's earlier Pro-Logic format, which utilized Matrix technology to add a center and single rear surround channel to stereo soundtracks.
Dolby Digital SR-D cinema soundtracks are optically recorded on a 35mm release print using sequential data blocks placed between every perforation hole on the sound track side of the film.
Dolby is part of a group of organizations involved in the development of AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), part of MPEG specifications, and also considered the successor to MP3.

 DVD Audio Basics
Dolby Digital is popular for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it is an extremely compact way of storing up to 6 channels of audio.
Dolby Digital is simply the method used to compress and carry the audio signal, and can carry anything from one mono channel to two stereo channels to six channels of surround audio.
DVD is a wonderfully scalable technology which caters for many budgets and many sound setups and allows you to progressively expand your audio setup as your budget and other constraints allow.

eaDHome - What's the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS?
Dolby Digital and DTS are similar in that they are both digital lossy audio coding technologies, which means they use “perceptual” data reduction techniques that are based on the characteristics of human hearing to mask the process, thereby preserving high fidelity sound.
The main difference is that Dolby Digital is designed to handle anything from mono to full 5.1-channel sound formats, and typically runs at data rates of 192 to 448 kbps depending on the number of audio channels and the application.
DTS was originally designed for a data rate of 1411 kbps, and typically runs at data rates of 754 or 1509 kbps depending on the data capacity available.

DVDFILE.COM: Dolby Digital Vs. DTS - Dolby Statement
DTS and Dolby Digital versions of a DVD are often released at different times.
Dolby Digital soundtracks are sometimes changed during mastering -- some, most notably Saving Private Ryan and other Dreamworks titles, have had portions of the LFE signal redirected to other channels to help improve compatibility for stereo listeners.
The Dolby Digital version of The Haunting DVD was the original Surround EX soundtrack, while the later DVD with DTS ES was a new mix to add the separate Bs channel.

Dolby vs DTS 5.1 Surround Sound: Which delivers better audio quality?
Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround are both 5.1 surround sound systems that encode six discrete audio channels into blocks of data in their respective Dolby or DTS bit streams.
The real Dolby vs DTS controversy is there because when dealing with different formats that use different coding techniques to deliver practically the same end result, it is not easy to define what constitutes better quality sound.
Dolby Digital is at times referred to as Dolby SR-Digital in moviehouse applications in view that a movie with Dolby Digital soundtrack would normally still come with a conventional SR (Spectral Recording) Dolby analog soundtrack as shown in the diagram.

In the fight between DTS and Dolby in the home theater market there is no question Dolby does and will continue to dominate when it comes to number of DVD titles that uses a DD 5.1 soundtrack.
Dolby Digital is the more efficient or aggressive compression algorithm of the two since it removes up to 90% or about 3 times as much as DTS Digital Surround.
Dolby claims its algorithms are simply more efficient than DTS and that there is no audible quality loss compared to the original PCM sound track.

I find the difference is the clarity of speech, in Dolby digital IMO the dialogue is a bit muffled with the background but with DTS the voices are a LOT clearer.
Dolby Digital is *THE* default muli-channel format, and as such has made concessions to expense and quality.
DTS has better channel integration, when a voice comes from the center channel it comes from the voice's onscreen location (slightly right/slighty left) not straight from the center channel speaker, etc.

But, DTS and DD have their arguments as to why compression is needed and both are valid.
DTS 5.1 runs at 1536 kbps and that is 3.5 times the bitrate of highest DD 5.1 encoding (448 k).
Having "DTS only" DVD's is possible and 100% playable (on DTS compatible systems of course) but does not conform to the standard you refer to thereby spells trouble commercially.

Dolby says that you can't draw any conclusions from the raw compression figures because it all depends on how well the codec (compression/decompression system) is designed.
Dolby also says that the DTS 0.1 channel rolls off the bass by a few dB at the top end of the range.
Dolby says DTS tracks often play louder than Dolby Digital ones due to the latter's dialogue normalisation feature (which is often set to reduce the playback level by 4dB) and an alleged 0.6dB boost in DTS's encoding of broadband material.

Dolby Digital vs. DTS: A Guide to the Strengths of the Formats — Audioholics Home Theater Reviews and News
With the birth of Dolby Surround in movie theaters, it was only a matter of time before we the consumers would reap the benefits of this trickle down technology into the consumer A/V marketplace.
Dolby argued that its name recognition, familiarity with the movie industry, and the choice of its system for audio coding in the new DTV standard made it a logical choice for DVD as well.
However, both DD and DTS will boast data rates, efficiency, etc, but what actually translates to better sound is a very ambiguous matter as there are more factors involved here that goes beyond the scope of this article.

GameSpot Forums - General Hardware Discussion - Dolby Digital vs. DTS
The reason why some peopel believe that DTS is better, is because more often they include the untouched theatrical mix on the DTS track, while the DD track is often adjusted so that it willl fold down to stereo, or even mono for playback on TV speakers.
Sometimes DTS does have better bass response and or dynamics, but that is the rare case.
And the Dolby Digital track should be even better on a HD format since it's taken from the Dolby Digital Plus core and starts off with a much higher bitrate than the DVD version.

In my testing (and i've tested quite a few DVDs) DTS audio has around 20db greater dynamic range that Dolby(the Loud sounds are louder and more separate and defined against the Quiet sounds.
