Topic: Dole Pineapple

  JAMES DRUMMOND DOLE: ENTREPRENEUR
Pineapple growing created the necessity for a market, and in order to enlarge the market to the entire United States (and other countries) and to extend the marketing season throughout the entire year, a cannery seemed necessary.
He left behind the pineapple industry that he had pioneered, and which came to be the second largest industry in the islands, producing in 1930 ninety percent of all the canned pineapple produced in the world.
The pineapple industry is no longer as important to Hawaii as it was, because other places are canning pineapples successfully and more cheaply, but the cannery he built is one of only two still canning pineapple in Hawaii today.

Dole Plantation - Hawaii's Complete Pineapple Experience - Pineapple Express - James
James Dole wasn't the first person to grow pineapple in Hawaii, but he was certainly the most influential.
So, in 1922, James Dole bought the island of Lanai and converted it from a cactus-covered island with 150 people into the largest pineapple plantation in the world with 20,000 pineapple-producing acres and over a thousand pineapple workers and their families.
The Hawaiian Pineapple Company he founded is now known the world over as Dole Foods Company, and the "Dole" brand is one of the most recognized brands in the world.

Thai Pineapple Public Co. v. USA
Dole agrees that its normal allocation methodology, allocating 100% of the pineapple fruit cost to canned pineapple fruit, was distorted because it resulted in an overstatement of the cost of production for canned pineapple fruit.
Dole, however, argues that the Court of International Trade correctly applied this court's holding in IPSCO III to reject Commerce's decision to rely on the normal allocation methodologies of TIPCO et al.
Dole has not repeated that challenge here, and thus we are not presented with any information that would rebut the presumptive correctness of Commerce's use of the TIPCO et al.

Although companies still ship fresh pineapple to the mainland, only a small percentage of canned pineapple is from the Islands, another example of the globalization of agriculture, as more and more food is being grown in developing countries where labor is cheaper.
Dole converted its pineapple fields into resort property on Lanai, the so-called "Pineapple Isle," where the company had grown the fruit since the 1920s.
Pineapple for canning and juice is roughly valued at $318 a ton, but fresh is valued at $626 a ton.
