  Subfamily Dolichoderinae
These three subfamilies are believed to have split off very early in evolutionary history from the lineage of the remainder of the ants.
Species of Dolichoderinae are often confused with species of subfamily Formicinae because both a have a single segmented petiole, lack a sting, and often are of similar body size and shape.

 Australian Ants Online - Dolichoderinae
Some species (in the genus Bothriomyrmex) are thought to establish their nests by having new queens invade the nests of other ants, kill the queen, and use the captured workers to help raise her own offspring.
Species of Dolichoderinae can be found in most regions of the world and in all major habitats.
Species of Dolichoderinae are most often confused with species of the subfamily Formicinae because both have a single segmented petiole, lack a sting and are often similar in overall body size and shape.

S. invicta Dufour's gland extract caused a mild effect in T. sessile lab colonies] In Iridomyrmex humilis Mayr, I. pruinosus (Roger), and Monacis bispinosa (Olivier) representing two genera phylogenetically far apart in the Dolichoderinae, the principal or exclusive source of the odor trail is the ventral organ, an exocrine gland opening behind abdominal sternite VI.
The ventral organ is peculiar to the Dolichoderinae and the ancestral Aneuretinae, and it is interpreted as an example of a 'social organ that has been evolved de novo as part of the colonial communication system.

Twenty two species of ants were recorded, belonging to the subfamilies Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, Myrmicinae, Ponerinae, and Pseudomyrmecinae.
The subfamily Myrmicinae was the most important in relation to the number of species and frequency of association.
The subfamily Dolichoderinae was represented by the genera Azteca Forel and Linepithema Mayr.

ON THE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS OF THE DOLICHODERINAE ANTS Azteca foreli and Conomyrma sp.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The communication system used for recruitment to food of the two Dolichoderinae species studied is very similar.
That is, the chemical mass recruitment system (WILSON 1962, JAFFE 1980) found is similar to that which had been described for the Dolichoderinae Iridomyrmex humilis (See Robertson et al., 1980), which has been classified as of the more advanced among the Formicidae (JAFFE 1984).
As in the majority of ants, the Dolichoderinae studied seem to use the democratic decision making system during chemical mass recruitment (JAFFE et al, 1985).
