Consiliul Judetean Dolj | History of Dolj County
The first documented mention of the county dates back from 1444, under the name the Marsh County – found in the Danube Plain – and stretched from the Blahnita Lake – found today in the Mehedinti County – to the present Bistret village.
Still, on the whole of the national economy, Dolj County was presented as an important agricultural county, with a rife commercial and banking activity, but with a unilateral, chopped, weak industry, lacking an adequate material base.
The mainly agricultural character of the county has been kept and increased later; essential changes in the economical structure have appeared much later, with the forced industrialization policy, which has lead to a massive migration of the people from villages into towns.
