Dollis Hill was particularly quiet and restful for a place so close to London, and Mr Gladstone, who was in his seventies by then, used to say that he felt better there than at any other place.
The house and approximately 96 acres of land to the south of Dollis Hill Lane were bought from Robert Finch, who continued to farm the land to the north of the lane.
While the house was in use as a hospital, a local paper published a photograph called "The Battle of Dollis Hill", showing the nurses and patients enjoying a snowball fight, and tea parties, concerts and other entertainments were held on the lawn.

 DOLLIS HILL RESERVOIR IS PUT INTO OPERATION
Thames Water’s newest reservoir, at Dollis Hill, went into operation for the first time this afternoon (Monday), supplying drinking water to 250,000 people across north-west London.
The reservoir, which will replace others at Barrow Hill and Shoot-Up Hill, has a capacity of 50 million litres and has been designed to meet demand for the next 20 years.
The reservoir was built on land originally purchased in 1903 by the since-defunct Metropolitan Water Board, which knew that the hill-side site would potentially be a good location for a reservoir, as water could be fed into the supply system by gravity.

Way back when (1993 or so), the Future Sound of London, who never played live, broadcast 'concerts' to venues and radio stations worldwide from their studios in Dollis Hill.
What is also interesting is that Dollis Hill was also the location of the British Post Office labs where Tommy Flowers built Colossus to crack German codes during WW2.
