He contributed to the study of volcanic geology, especially through examination and comparison of the products of volcanoes.
He wrote several works on his findings during geological journeys, specially in S Europe, and is known for his Sur la philosophie mineralogique (1801).

On 13 June at 0308 eruption tremor again began within Dolomieu crater, marking the beginning of the third phase of the eruption.
Following a slight increase in seismicity, a two-day eruption occurred at Dolomieu crater of Piton de la Fournaise on 30 May. Lava fountaining was observed and a lava flow extending ~400 m and with a width of ~250 m was produced.
On October 12, the Piton de la Fournaise Volcano erupted SE of its Dolomieu crater flank in the Enclos Fouquet.
