Dolores Hidalgo is a small city in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.
Dolores Hidalgo is located at 21.17°N 100.93°W, at an elevation of about 6200 feet above sea level.
The city was a small town known simply as Dolores when Miguel Hidalgo uttered his famous cry for the independence of Mexico (the "Grito de Dolores") here on September 16, 1910.

Dolores of that time was a poor, largely Indian village, but the ragged army of Hidalgo and Allende marched from here to San Miguel, then to Celaya and Salamanca until finally, having grown to a force of some 20,000 men, they had their first real confrontation with royalist troops in Guanajuato.
Hidalgo was captured after a final defeat in Guadalajara, then executed and beheaded on July 30, 1811.
Today, Dolores Hidalgo is justly well known as a center for the design and fabrication of the popular Talavera ceramic pieces.

Miguel Hidalgo, along with three other revolutionary leaders, were executed in 1811, and for 10 years, their heads hung in public view, encased in steel cages in Guanajuato.
The best part about Dolores Hidalgo today is that the town, population 60,000, is relatively free of tourists -- in spite of it being "The Cradle of Independence." The non-tourist atmosphere may change soon, however, as more Norteamericanos and urban Mexicans flock to this historic place.
Dolores Hidalgo is one of the premier places in Mexico to buy Talavera (a porcelain type pottery introduced by Father Hidalgo).

Hidalgo studied in the city of Valladolid, the present Morelia, and was ordained priest in 1778.
Hidalgo was warned by Doña Josefa Ortiz of the betrayal of the committee, and without further delay he declared openly for independence on 16 Sept., 1810, the day upon which Mexico celebrates the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
From Valladolid Hidalgo turned his army towards the capital, and vanquished the colonial forces, commanded by Trujillo and Iturbide (the future emperor), on the mount of Las Cruces, a short distance from the City of Mexico.
