Cetacean intelligence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cetaceans include whales, porpoises, and dolphins, and while all are broadly considered intelligent, dolphins have generated the most attention as their capabilities appear to be of a different order than that of their relatives.
The dolphin is a voluntary breather, even in sleep, with the result that veterinary anesthesia of dolphins is impossible, as it would result in asphyxiation.
Dolphin brain stem transmission time is faster than that normally found in humans, and is roughly equivalent to the speed found in rats.

Dolphin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dolphins are aquatic mammals related to whales and porpoises, famous for their intelligence, apparent compassion, and joy.
Dolphins are often regarded as one of the most intelligent animal species, though it is hard to say just how intelligent dolphins are as straightforward comparisons of species' relative intelligence are complicated by differences in sensory apparatus, response modes, and nature of cognition.
Most dolphins have acute eyesight, both in and out of the water, and their sense of hearing is superior to that of humans.

 Dolphin Intelligence
Intelligence tests are very difficult to conduct or compare different species, so when we look at the intelligence of a dolphin or other animal compared to the human's it is almost always unfair because we are testing that animal's intelligence in our environment.
The study of dolphin intelligence is very interesting because we are still on the verge of discovery, there is much we don't understand and much we still have to learn.
Dolphins may not be as intelligent as humans, but there is not really anyway to measure it at this point, maybe, sometime in the future, we will be the ones learning the tricks...

All the dolphins at the institute are trained to hold onto any litter that falls into their pools until they see a trainer, when they can trade the litter for fish.
Another dolphin mimicked the scraping of the pool's observation window by a diver, even copying the sound of the air-demand valve of the scuba gear while releasing a stream of bubbles from his blowhole.
Dolphins gradually build up a network of relationships, ranging from the strong bond between a mother and calf, to casual "friendships" with other community members.

Dolphins once were hunted commercially, especially for the small quantity of valuable oil extracted from parts of the head and used to lubricated delicate watch mechanisms.
Because of the ability of dolphins to learn and perform complex tasks in captivity, their continuous communications with one another, and their ability, through training, to approximate the sounds of a few human words, some investigators have suggested that the animals might be capable of learning a true language and communicating with humans.

Spirit of the Dolphin: Swim Journeys   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Although dolphin intelligence is no longer underestimated, their awareness and consciousness often is. Asking that kind of intimacy with very conscious beings demands an honoring and understanding of who they are and how we can best relate in a respectful way to them.
Swimming with wild dolphins means you meet them on their turf, your experience totally dependent on their choice of how, when, and how long they will have an intimate experience with you.
Facilitators range from people who consider their work with dolphins a "calling" and for whom it is a primary focus, to those who are healers or therapists of some kind who desire to take people on a dolphin journey as an adjunct experience.

Lilly's claims for dolphin intelligence are supported by the remarkable learning skills and playful, inventive behavior of these animals.
In recent years, researchers have observed bottlenose dolphins and beluga whales in captivity creating underwater rings and helices of air for their own amusement.
They may serve as an indication that high intelligence is not always, or even often, accompanied by a significant level of technology (see intelligence, nature of).

These dolphins have also been kept in the same tanks with older dolphins that were caught too young to have learned such a code, further reducing their chances for exposure to any natural communication code.
Because of the Navy's classification of its dolphin program we can only say that, in public, dolphin communication research, today, is still at the state of development Helen Keller (1880-1968) was when Ann Sullivan (died 1936) first attempted to break through the significant barriers Keller's deafness and blindness posed for her intellectual development.
Further in the future, dolphins trained in this human whistled language may then be able to act as translators or intermediaries in open ocean research with feral dolphins that use their own natural communication code.

Whales on the Net - Dolphin Intelligence
In the early history of research on dolphins there were three experiments which stood out as minimal indicators of dolphin mental abilities.
These three experiments were successful as demonstrations of dolphin mental abilities and the only limitations demonstrated in the studies were the perceptions of humans, their experimental designs, and the interpretations that were in vogue for the period.
The resulting question for the reader to answer is whether the Navy's classification of their dolphin program, during Batteau's ground-breaking research, was a disservice to the study of animal behavior considering the changes seen in that area of study since 1967.

Deaths in fishing nets and in dolphin hunts are far from humane and may have widespread impacts on the groups and populations left behind.

 Dolphin Intelligence. | MetaFilter
Dolphins have been known to display almost all of the qualities which we would consider uniquely human, qualities that we would consider a mark of ‘higher’ intelligence.
They are tool users, they are highly creative (perhaps even artistic), they enjoy recreational and social activities, from surfing (either on waves or around the prow of boats) to sex, and they have proven time and time again that they are self-aware.
I'm not disputing that dolphins are more intelligent than animals that can't do anything with any tools, but I'm simply saying that I don't see how they are more intelligent than wolves, monkeys, etc. that also have social groups and play.
