Domenico Zampieri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Domenico Zampieri (or Domenichino) (October 21, 1581 - April 15, 1641), was a prominent high Baroque painter of the Bolognese or Carracci School of Painters.
As an architect, Domenichino was said to have designed the Villa di Belvedere at Frascati, and the whole of the Villa Ludovisi.
Domenichino, in the tradition of Annibale Carracci, restrained the late-Mannerist and Baroque impulses that were contorting the canvases of contemporaries; and aimed for a more settled peaceful representations.

From 1630 onwards Domenichino was engaged in Naples, chiefly on a series of frescoes (never wholly completed) of the life of St Januarius in the Cappella del Tesoro.
Domenichino, in correctness of design, expression of the passions, and simplicity and variety in the airs of his heads, has been considered little inferior to Raphael; but in fact there is the greatest gulf fixed between the two.
Domenichino is esteemed the most distinguished disciple of the Caracci, or second only to Guido Reni.

He was closely associated with the workshop of Annibale Carracci, the preeminent Bolognese painter in Rome, and it is possible that he assisted Annibale on a painting of the Flight into Egypt, one of six lunettes in a chapel of the Aldobrandini Palace.
One of these is a compositional sketch in pen and ink, now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid; 2 the organization of this sketch resembles that of the painting, and the arrangement of the figures in the lower left corner is especially similar.
Domenico Zampieri was born in Bologna in 1581.

The unicorn is not merely an attribute of the virgin.
In the tradition of this allegory of chastity, the unicorn seeks refuge in the lap of a virgin.
Domenichino emphasizes the shyness of these two sensitive creatures who have moved out of the centre of the picture towards the edge of the woods.

 Biography
In 1631 Domenichino moved to Naples, and in his ceiling frescos of the S. Gennaro chapel in the cathedral he made even greater concessions to the fashionable Baroque.
Domenichino was important in fields other than monumental fresco decoration, particularly as an exponent of ideal landscape, in which he formed the link between Annibale Carracci and Claude (four of his landscapes are in the Louvre).
He was one of the finest draughtsmen of his generation (the Royal Library at Windsor Castle has a superb collection of his drawings) and also an excellent portraitist (Monrignor Agucchi, City Art Gallery, York, c.1610).

Domenico Zampieri, called Domenichino, was born in October 1581 in Bologna where he first studied under Denis Calvaert before entering the Carracci Academy in, or after, 1595.
In 1617 he returned to Bologna, but with the election of a Bolognese Pope, Gregory XV, in 1621, Domenichino returned to Rome where he was made Papal Architect and received an increasing number of commissions, notably for the decoration of the New Theatine church of S. Andrea della Valle (1622-7).
In 1631 he undertook to supply frescoes and five altarpieces for the Duomo at Naples and, apart from a visit to Rome in 1634-5, this commission occupied him until his death in Naples on 6 April 1641.

The subject derives from Virgil's Aeneid (V,485) where warriors are described competing in an archery contest and shooting a tree with their first arrow, a ribbon with their second and a falling bird with their third.
The archery theme was adopted as a metaphor for shrewd arguments that hit the mark, which was topical at the time, as the dedication of the Dicerie Sacre by the poet Giovan Battista Marino to Pope Paul V indicates.
In capturing nature in clear compositions that predominate over the use of colour, Domenichino nonetheless adopts venetian tones now and then in the flowing draperies, and there are extraordinary passages from green to yellow, white to blue, and various shades of purple.
