Domenico Trezzini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Domenico was born in Astano, near Lugano, in the Italian speaking Ticino (at that time administered by the German speaking Cantons).
Domenico Trezzini was very important for another aspect of Russian architectural history: in founding a school based on the European model, he laid the foundations for the development of the Petrine Baroque.
As a testimony of the cordial relationship that linked Domenico Trezzini with the Tsar, his son Pietro Antonio Trezzini (who also became a noted architect) had Peter I of Russia himself as a godfather.

 Domenico Trezzini
Trezzini returned to Saint Petersburg in 1706 and he was ordered to rebuild the "Sankt Piter Burch" fortress in stone, and for twenty-seven years this was to remain his main worksite.
Domenico Trezzini's plans determined the current form of this part of the city, which is living evidence of his painstaking work as an urban planner.
Trezzini’s ultimate customer, Peter the Great and the members of society’s higher ranks in general, were well versed in western architecture and architectural theory which they had studied firsthand or in the illustrated theoretical works in their libraries.

Perhaps more significantly, Trezzini, working with Russian architects, laid out a street plan for the expanding city in 1717, and with it the designs of the three housing types that still characterise St Petersburg: houses for the "renowned", the "prosperous" and the "base".
Trezzini's designs, however, although baroque in spirit and detail, were essentially regular and modest.
Under Trezzini, the deeply satisfying street plan was formulated with local talents, while the building of the Alexander Nevsky monastery saw the teaming of Russian, Italian and other designers, artists and craftsmen.
