  MASSA TOURING
The abbot Domenico Vandelli, a famous mathematician and engineer, was entrusted with this project and he started the work in 1738.
Vandelli street didn't become a vital arterial road, as the Modenese governors had hoped and toward the half of 19th century it had already been quitted.
In the Apuan side the Vandelli has been widely destroyed on the slope of Garfagnana; nevertheless it is possible to find at the head of the valley an ancient road-bed which rises sweetly and long among the beeches, towards the green terrace of Acqui Freddi, where a pleasant spring lies just under the Tambura Pass.

La Via Vandelli Tuscany Monuments and Museums
The old Via Vandelli is an important road, built by Francesco III d'Este between 1739 and 1751, linking Massa and Modena for the first time, with a 180 Kms.
The duke commissioned his mathematician Domenico Vandelli with the daring task, thereby having the first carriage street of Garfagnana built.
Around half of the 19th century the Via Vandelli was still the only road linking Emilia to Garfagnana, and it was put out of service only with the inception of the building of the road to Passo delle Radici in 1859.
