  Domenico Veneziano
Domenico Veneziano (c.1400-1461) was an Italian painter, most probably born in Venice.
Veneziano's work is noted for both his use of colour and perspective.
Vasari alleged that Veneziano was murdered by Andrea del Castagno, although this seems rather unlikely, given that Castagno died circa 1457, four years before Veneziano.

 Biography
The first document concerning Domenico Veneziano we have is the letter that he himself wrote in April 1438 from Perugia (where he was working for the Baglioni family, as Vasari tells us) to Piero de' Medici, asking him for help in obtaining the commission for a painting from Cosimo the Elder, Piero's father.
In 1439 Domenico returned to Florence from Perugia in 1439 and he is documented as working on the frescoes of stories from the life of the Virgin in the church of Sant'Egidio inside the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova.
Domenico is also mentioned in the expenditure ledger of the church of Santa Trinità in Pistoia, who paid him for a consultancy concerning the altarpiece of the Trinity by Pesellino and Filippo Lippi in 1457 (today the altarpiece is in the National Gallery, London).

Domenico Veneziano Biography | Encyclopedia of World Biography
Domenico Veneziano (Dominic, the Venetian) whose full name was Domenico di Bartolomeo da Venezia, which means Dominic (son of) Bartholomew from Venice, was originally from Venice, as his name indicates, but he worked in Florence for most of his life.
This fragment also demonstrates Domenico's awareness of the art of his Florentine contemporaries Fra Angelico, Masolino, and Lorenzo Ghiberti, as well as the principles of linear perspective only recently discovered by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi and applied in relief sculpture by Donatello and in painting by Masaccio.
This is made especially eloquent through Domenico's strict observance of the natural flow of light and of the shadows cast by objects.

Painters Of Florence - Domenico Veneziano
Domenico was born in Venioe about 1400, and probably became acquainted with Cosimo de' Medici during his exile from Florence in 1434, since four years later the Venetian artist addressed a letter to Cosimo's son Piero, which shows that he was on friendly terms with the family.
It was to him that Domenico Veneziano, in April 1438, wrote the following letter from Perugia, where he was engaged in painting the figures of twenty-five illustrious soldiers and scholars in the hall of the Casa Baglioni.
The high reputation in which Domenico was still held at Perugia is proved by the fact that when Bonfigli executed his frescoes in the Palace of the Commune, an express condition was made that the work was to be valued by Fra Angelico, Fra Filippo and Domenico of Venice.

Madonna and Child by DOMENICO VENEZIANO
The Madonna and Child in Washington and the Saints John the Baptist and Francis in the Santa Croce Museum in Florence both belong to Domenico's late period and are closely related stylistically to the Magnoli Altarpiece.
The Washington Madonna is the same elegant and gentle figure typical of all Veneziano's female characters.
The dating of this painting is a matter of controversy: some scholars think that it must have been painted just before the Magnoli Altarpiece, while others consider it an early work.

History of Art:The High Renaissance, Mannerism - Vasari  "Lives of the Artists"
But now, resolving to do by treachery what he could not do openly without manifest danger, he feigned great friendship for this Domenico; and he, being a good fellow and amiable, fond of singing and playing the lute, willingly made friends with him, Andrea appearing to be both a man of talent and good company.
One evening in summer, Domenico as usual took his lute and departed from S. Maria Nuova, leaving Andrea in his chamber drawing, he having refused to accompany him on the excuse of having to make certain drawings of importance.
So Domenico being gone out to his pleasure, Andrea disguised himself and went to wait for him at the corner, and when Domenico came up, returning home, he struck at him with a leaden instrument, and breaking his lute, pierced him in the stomach at the same moment.

This panel and Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata are from one of Domenico's major works, a large altarpiece in the church of Santa Lucia de' Magnoli in Florence.
His graceful figure, nude and modeled like an ancient statue, is one of the first embodiments of the Renaissance preoccupation with the art of ancient Greece and Rome.
The figure is convincingly three-dimensional because the tones Domenico used for his flesh are graduated, one color blending continuously into the next.

 Old Master Artist: Domenico Veneziano
Domenico Veneziano (1405?-1461), Italian painter, who was one of the chief innovators in early Renaissance painting in Florence.
His major work, the altarpiece for Santa Lucia dei Magnoli in Florence (1445?, Uffizi Gallery, Florence), has a clarity and lightness that was an important contribution to Florentine art and was an alternative to the heavy monumentality characteristic of Masaccio's style.
The predellas (subsidiary paintings that form appendages to a larger one, especially as part of an altarpiece) that once accompanied Domenico's Santa Lucia work are dispersed and can be found in the National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; and Staatliche Museen, Berlin.

Domenico Veneziano Reproduction Master Works Art Gallery
Early Italian Renaissance painter (full name: Domenico di Bartolomeo da Venezia), one of the founders of the 15th-century Florentine school of painting. We know very little about the life and work of this painter; and even Vasari knew very little, so that he filled his biography of Domenico with complicated theories and colourful anecdotes.
The entire cycle was destroyed in the 18th century.Between 1445 and 1447 Domenico painted his second surviving signed work: an altarpiece for the Church of Santa Lucia dei Magnoli, usually called the Magnoli, or St Lucy, altarpiece.
It combines gay colour with careful realism and has an expansive and accurately drawn landscape background. As we learn from Vasari, as soon as he had finished the Magnoli Altarpiece Domenico went to the Marches, in 1447, to fresco the ceiling of the church of Santa Maria in Loreto.
