		Power sockets are female electrical connectors that have slots or holes which accept the pins or blades of power plugs inserted into them and deliver electricity to the plugs.
		The reason that there are now over a dozen different styles of plugs and wall outlets is that many European countries, for nationalistic reasons (and arguably, as one of many non-tariff barriers to trade that continue to this day), preferred to develop plug designs of their own instead of adopting a common standard.

	Non-standard domestic power sockets?
		I'd be concerned about the British socket because it is specifically a polarized design (hot wire, grounded wire, and grounding wire) whereas the 240 volt power in the USA generally comes as two phase wires 180 degrees apart, each being ungrounded and 120 volts relative to ground.
		Plugs can be inserted either way, so everything that could be plugged in there must be designed so that it is safe with either power conductor being ungrounded.
		A few weeks ago when a power supply of mine died, I disassembled it and confirmed the rear AC cutoff switch was of the 2 pole variety, shutting off both wires at the same time (which were colored brown and blue).
