| | ACLU News: California Expands Domestic Partnership Rights (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05) |
 | | The landmark legislation, AB 205 (Goldberg), passed in September 2003, expands domestic partnership rights and responsibilities for gay and lesbian couples, putting them on equal footing with married couples when it comes to hundreds of state laws dealing with property rights, child custody, debt assumption, health care decisions, and other issues. |
 | | Although domestic partners will be entitled to almost all of the rights, benefits and obligations California confers on married spouses, the "Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act" can't provide the 1,138 rights and benefits afforded to married couples by the federal government. |
 | | Domestic partners will not be able to file joint tax returns and their unions will not be recognized by the federal government in qualifying for Medicare, Social Security, veteran, food stamp, housing, immigration or other national programs and subsidies. |
