  Domestic Service
Domestic service became a distinctively female occupation in Canada during the 19th century.
Domestic service was the most common paid employment for Canadian women before 1900: in 1891 there were nearly 80 000 women servants in Canada.
Most live-in domestics were young women who did general work in 1- or 2-servant households in urban centres or on farms; a small minority had specialized positions as part of a large staff.

H-Net Review: Patty Seleski on Domestic Service and Gender, 1660-1750: Life and Work in the London ...
Early on in his study of early modern domestic service in London, Tim Meldrum notes that his subject has acquired a timeliness and a relevance largely absent from the period in the early 1990s when he began the doctoral dissertation on which his book is based.
Also outdated are previous accounts of domestic service that have relied on sociology and on modernization theory and that have overemphasized service's teleology as a narrative of change.
What persisted in service over the whole of Meldrum's period, he argues, were a diverse set of relationships between servants and their employers, most powerfully experienced through and differentiated by household size and gender.

VAWnet :: Evaluating the Outcomes of Domestic Violence Service Providers: Some Practical Considerations and Strategies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
In some cases, services are extremely short-term (such as providing information over the phone) or are provided to anonymous individuals (as is often the case with crisis calls).
In this example, that might include: (1) the number of women correctly identified in the hospital as survivors of domestic abuse; (2) survivors' perceptions of the effectiveness of the intervention in meeting their needs (including receiving information and support they perceived to be helpful); and (3) hospital personnel's attitudes toward survivors of domestic violence.
However, most if not all domestic violence service programs strive to provide services unique to each woman's situation and view each woman's "satisfaction with the degree to which the program met her needs" as a desired short-term outcome.
