There are Mother Goose tales, such as a farmwife might have told; there is the proverbial goose that laid the golden eggs, warning about the perils of greed.

The Greylag Goose, Anser anser, is a bird with a wide range in the Old World, apparently breeding where suitable localities are to be found in many European countries, although it no longer breeds in southwestern Europe.
Thus the Greylag Goose is the grey goose, which in England when the name was given, was not strongly migratory but lagged behind the other wild goose species when they left for their northern breeding quarters.
Within science, the greylag goose is most notable as being the bird with which the ethologist Konrad Lorenz first did his major studying into the behavioural phenomenon of imprinting.

 Confusing Domestic Geese
These domestic greylag geese were present in the marina at Myers Pt., Lansing, NY on 24 Feb 2001, the same day a real Greater White-fronted Goose was off the south shore (go here to see that bird).
Domestic geese can be any color between completely gray (wild type) to completely white, but they are always big and blocky with a different bill shape.
Its Canada Goose heritage is very apparent from the dark neck, facial pattern, and overall body pattern, but the white behind the bill and the long red bill itself point to a domestic goose parent.

Regardless, a goose has a huge cavity and we cannot resist filling it with a mixture of rice, pine nuts and vegetables; because we carefully pull off excess fat and roast the bird on a rack, we've never found our stuffing to be too fatty.
Our first thought was that the wild goose wouldn't serve as many people as a domestic goose, but when we cooked equal weights of both, the wild goose actually yielded more meat, while we poured off more fat from the roasting pan under the domestic bird.

It was Ithaca newcomer Jeff's persistence in looking through the geese that we regulars ignored, and his persistence in coming back to this same odd goose that got me to look at it and realize it was a "real" White-fronted Goose.
I always want to hear a few details with a White-fronted Goose sighting to assure that the observer (especially a novice observer) did not confuse a domestic goose.

The Toulouse Goose is one of the larger goose breeds.
The "utility" Toulouse Goose is smaller and lacks the dewlap being basically a cross bred grey Heinz with no value other than for the table.
The Toulouse Goose was bred in southern France (near the city of Toulouse) originally for pate de Fois Gras now considered a superior meat bird in Europe.

The neck coloration and the loong straight bill show that the domestic goose was probably a domestic swan goose (chinese goose).
The other parent of this goose must have been a canada goose, due to the dark brownish coloration and the fl coloration on the neck.
They are in fact domestic hybrids Chinese x Barnyard geese, as the head and neck pattern and the slightly swollen base of the bill show.

I suppose it could be possible that you had a Snow Goose in with a flock of the smaller Canada Geese, such as "Richardson's" or "Cackling" (subspecies of Canada Goose).
The thing is, this bird seemed to have that fl smile of the snow goose-- but I have to admit that, on second thought, it is just possible that this fl smile trim was possibly that of an immature tundra or mute.
I suppose it would be shocking if a domestic escape was a strong enough flyer to stay with the Canada geese, but then again there are bunches of the CG that just flap around here all year.
