		Domingo is finally an involved Radames, to me. I have all his studio recordings of this work, and even though he sings them all exceptionally well, they are not always that involved to me. The voice is great, but something seems to be missing.

		Arroyo sings super well and her non-involved sound is really the result of the recording technique and not her actually singing.

		I am not fan of Un Ballo in Maschera, Arroyo, Domingo, Grist, Muti or Capuccilli, so I have no reason to shout the biased glories of this performance, neither can I reject the greatness of it.
		Although she is not a very exciting singer, Martina Arroyo simply sings it better than all the others.
		Domingo was in good voice when he recorded this role for EMI (the same cannot be said about his performance on DG), but I think that the part has not really much to do with him.

		Domingo offer his best and > perhaps the best Radames on records.
		By sheer coincidence, I heard this for the first time today, and agree that it's a superb AIDA, unless one has a problem with quick tempi (and this one's very fast - they manage to fit Act 2 onto the first CD, without spilling over onto the second disc).
		As for Domingo as the "best Radames on records", well, de gustibus and all that, but he really does struggle a bit with "Celeste Aida" (not with the B-flat, which is fine, but he does some huffing and puffing earlier in the aria), and always sounds a little more effortful than I'd like.

		In the '72 Abbado, his sound is softer-grained, covered and dusky, with less ring to it, while the interpretation is surprisingly blustery and crude, especially in the Nile Scene.
		That's where I'd go if I were of a mind to upgrade, rather than to Opera d'Oro II.
