Locker himself (1731–1800) was a veteran of the American War, during which he had been young Lieutenant Nelson's first captain, before his health brought him ashore and to Greenwich in 1793.
Similarly, probably in the 1850s, the Barrington family negotiated the return of the less battle-filled 'halves' of the three pairs of Serres paintings of his actions, the most important being a six-foot canvas of his squadron at anchor off St Lucia just after its capture of the island in 1778.
It was a stroke of fortune that in 2001 the NMM was able to buy it back and reunite this important pair, not least since (unlike its retained pendant) the 'wandering' canvas had thereby escaped restoration of any sort since painted.
