Dominion Land Survey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The DLS is the dominant survey method in the Prairie provinces, but it is also used in British Columbia along the Railway Belt (near the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway), and in the Peace River Block in the northeast of the province.
The survey was begun July 10, 1871, shortly after Manitoba and the North-West Territories became part of Canada.
In townships surveyed from 1881 to the present, road allowances are reduced both in width and in number.

Survey township - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Survey township, sometimes called Congressional township, as used by the United States Public Land Survey System, refers to a square unit of land, that is nominally six (U.S. Survey) miles (~9.7 km) on a side.
Stemming from this is the expression, "the lower 40", which is the 40 acres on a settler's land that is lowest in elevation, in the direction towards which water drains toward a stream, and the "back forty", the portion farthest from the settler's dwelling.
A survey township is used to establish boundaries for land ownership.

Even if a survey has been audited, you could be introducing a 50-meter error when comparing data based on different grids.
