  Jean-Dominique Vivant Denon
Denon's main duty as director was to incorporate the looted works of art Napoleon was claiming from the campaigns in Austria, Spain, Italy, Poland and the German states into the Imperial museums.
Denon's fame rests not with the history of art he wrote, but rather his ability to create the first comprehensive public museum arranging art by schools and periods.
Denon's museum launched the 19th century's quest for edifying, public museums which would result in the acquisition frenzies of national museums throughout Europe, such as Wilhelm von Bode (q.v.) in Berlin.

Vivant Denon Replacing El Cid's Remains in their Tombs by FRAGONARD, Alexandre-Évariste
Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825) was a French painter, printmaker, illustrator and author.
A diplomat under the ancien régime, he served Napoleon as supervisor of the scholars sent with his Egyptian campaign, and afterwards as director of the Musée Napoleon (Louvre).
Denon had a passion for collecting relics of the great - bones of Abelard, a tooth of Voltaire, whiskers from Henri IV's moustache - and Fragonard depicts him replacing in its tomb, after an evidently minute examination, the skull of the semi-legendary eleventh-century Spanish hero El Cid.
