DOMTAR Industries says it spilled 3.5 million gallons (13.25 million litres) of untreated waste water from its pulp and paper mill in Maine into the St. Croix River on Canada Day.
DOMTAR has notified the Government of New Brunswick that the spill occurred at about 6:30 a.m.
DOMTAR says the waste was highly diluted and the company opened up some waterways, to flush the river out.

Domtar said its foreign exchange loss, net of hedging programs, was $175 million for the year, while the effect of currency losses and higher duties on softwood lumber exports to the United States, among other negative factors, caused a reduction of $262 million in operating profit when compared to 2003.
Domtar, which in the last two months announced the closure of two mills in Ontario and one mill in Quebec, said it would "continue to review the viability of each of its Canadian operations as well as investment plans for each of its mills."

NEW YORK --Canadian paper maker Domtar Inc. said Tuesday that Canada's Competition Bureau is not challenging its $3.3 billion acquisition of Weyerhaeuser Co.'s fine paper business.
The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter, subject to approvals from Investment Canada and Domtar shareholders.
Shares of Domtar, which is based in Montreal, fell 6 cents to $8.18, while Weyerhaeuser shares fell 24 cents to $71.93 in midday trading, both on the New York Stock Exchange.
