Donald Bennett was born the youngest son of a grazier in Toowoomba, Queensland.
Bennett was recommissioned in 1941, promoted to Wing Commander in December of that year, and appointed to the command of 77 Squadron, based at RAF Leeming flying Whitleys for Coastal Command.
In April 1942 Bennett was given command of 10 Squadron (Halifaxes) and shortly afterwards led a raid on the Tirpitz.

I'll stipulate that Bennett's gambling didn't hurt anyone else, if his defenders will stipulate that there's something unseemly about a big-time gambler who's made a fortune from lecturing other people about their participation in activities that don't harm anyone but themselves.
If Bill Bennett is going to make a living off of criticizing other people's private, consensual, legal actions (not just pot-smoking) then I'll shed no tears for him when people make the same type of criticisms of his private choices.

As a Lieutenant Colonel, Bennett, along with the 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion on the June 6, 1944 landed with the second wave at 0720 on D-Day.

I've been meaning to write a reminiscence of Don Bennett for a couple of weeks, and this week I had a chance to talk to some folks who remembered those days and filled in some blanks.
Don brought Darryl Ervin in on drums, and we functioned as the house band on Friday nights for a while.
What eventually happened to Don is an indictment of the medical profession in America, and I hope that his children win the lawsuits that are still pending.
