Don Blanding, poet and artist, autographed his new book, "Joy Is an Inside Job," written while he was living in Hawai'i in the early 1950s.
Blanding was born in the town of Kingfisher in what was then, in 1894, still the Oklahoma Territory.
Partially in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Blanding enlisted in the Army in 1942, at the age of 47.

Blanding married Dorothy Binney Putnam (described as a "socialite") on 13 June 1940, and they lived in Fort Pierce,Florida.

Don and a group of friends and acquaintances started the island tradition of wearing flower leis on the first day of May of each year.

Vernon Kilns went out of business in 1958 and its molds and patterns were acquired by Metlox Pottery, which produced some of the Vernon Kilns shapes and patterns as well as new patterns on those shapes under a "Vernonware by Metlox" product line until Metlox went out of business in the 1970's.
Don Blanding (1894-1957) was the first of the famous artists to design and add his signature to pieces of Vernon Kilns dinnerware.
Known as the "Hawaiian poet", he was a globe-trotter, author, and lecturer as well as an artist and illustrator.

The following short letter, typed on a plain sheet of paper without letterhead, was sent by Don Blanding to a literary clipping service in New York State.
Here is a "bulletin" created by Don Blanding shortly after he re-enlisted in the Army as a private.
Accompanying the document is a typed note, also signed "Private Don," that describes the genesis of "Soldier's Baby," a poem that was originally titled "To Gail." It appears in Blanding's 1943 book, Pilot Bails Out.

He spent many years in Barnard, where he owned and operated Blanding Hardware and Implement Co. He moved in 1958 to Minneapolis, where he owned and operated Blanding Motors.
Survivors include two sons, Don Blanding, Oklahoma City, and Mike Blanding, Silver Lake; two sisters, Inez Griffith, Downs, and Beth Lightfoot, Salina; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

When I ask people if they know of Don Blanding, it is a 99%, "No, I have never heard of him." He was known as the Southern California Poet for a long time and lived in Laguna Beach, CA for a while, but loved Hawaii and other places as his poetry reflects.
Don Blanding died in a hospital many years ago in Santa Ana, California.
