DON BROTHWELL: Because museums, now, are very sensitive to the whole question of how far you investigate and open bodies up and so on, it's important to use whatever non-destructive techniques you can.
DON BROTHWELL: We have used old techniques, just looking at the chewed up remains of the food, and that means looking at the actual plant tissue in the stomach contents.
DON BROTHWELL: We have advanced these studies by looking at the chemistry of the foods, as well, and so we have been able to reveal, for the first time, using chemical analytical techniques, that the individual was taking in some sort of milk or milk products, as well as the cereals in his last meal.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 98.5.23
Don R. Brothwell and Patricia Brothwell, Food in Antiquity: A Survey of the Diet of Early Peoples.
They point out that the prevalence of malnutrition in the world today suggests that malnutrition and periodic famines were frequent in the ancient world too, despite the fact that societies dependent on hunting and collecting economies usually possess far more knowledge of edible resources than do settled agricultural groups or city dwellers.
The work of the Brothwells amply demonstrates that the archaeology and history of food and diet of ancient peoples is a fast-expanding research enterprise which has important implications for our views of ancient and contemporary societies.

Orkneyjar Archaeology News - Academic questions validity of St Magnus' remains
Professor Brothwell challenges the widely held belief that the remains in the pillar in the Cathedral belong to the historical Magnus Erlendsson.
After studying 1925 reports on bones, Professor Brothwell has concluded that the damage to the skull does not match the Orkneyinga Saga's account of the murder of Magnus on Egilsay in 1117.
In his paper, Professor Brothwell explains: "Neither of these two possible injuries, if they are indeed trauma evidence, could have been received from axe blows directed down from the front, and this calls into question either the authenticity of the skull or the position of the executioner."

 University of York Press Release
Two York archaeologists, Dr Laurajane Smith and Professor Don Brothwell, have entered into the debate currently raging in the world of archaeology about the controversial issue of the repatriation of human remains.
Writing in the journal 'Antiquity', Dr Smith and Professor Brothwell detail some of the sensitive issues which arise when considering the return to the society they belong to of human remains that were removed during an archaeological investigation.
However, Professor Brothwell argues that hard science and modern day practicalities should not be compromised in the interests of political correctness and expediency.

Orkneyjar - The Relics of St Magnus
Professor Brothwell's paper challenges the widely held belief that the remains in the pillar in the cathedral belong to the historical Magnus Erlendsson.
After studying 1925 reports on the bones, Professor Brothwell concluded that the damage to the skull does not match the Orkneyinga Saga's account of the murder of Magnus on Egilsay.
From the damage to the skull, Professor Brothwell suggests that a sideward blow to the head felled the man. As the victim was knocked sideways, fell and rolled over he was struck again.
