Don Martin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Don Martin (May 18, 1931 – January 6, 2000) was a popular American cartoon artist whose best-known work appeared in MAD magazine from 1956 to 1988.
He received the National Cartoonist Society Special Features Award for 1981 and 1982, and was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2004.
Not long afterwards, he began cartooning for the rival humor publication Cracked, which tweaked its larger competitor by billing Martin as "Cracked's Crackedest Artist." After six years with Cracked, Martin parted company with the magazine in 1993.

We had several phone conversations before I decided it was time to really get down to brass tacks and ask this guy some serious questions about how he had come to be one of Mad’s funniest writers.
I never knew what plagiarism was in those days, so on some pages of that sketchbook, alongside the Garbage Pail Kids, I totally ripped off Don Martin’s parody of “Excalibur” and drew just like him, not tracing but actually copying some of the knights’ heads, or their armor.
I think maybe on reflection this was my way of being closer to what I admired, which was Don Martin and Mad.

These are the artists that defined "MAD" when I was a mere lad, and even if you do not recognize the name, you will recognize the artwork (I actually made it almost all the way to 2004 before I realized that Antonio Prohias did all the Spy vs. Spy bits when I was a kid).
Possibly the most poignant was the sad case of Don Martin, who drew those jug-headed characters in those "One Fine Day" episodes.
Through illness and unspecified other problems, he was forced into an unwanted collaboration with the equally talented Duck Edwing, and then decamped altogether to an imitator, before passing away not too long ago.

Don Martin's later work at Cracked, for example, was attributed to "a Mad knock-off." Cracked may not have been a great magazine but it did outlast all the other Mad wannabes.
That's worth noting, especially when it attracted ex-Madmen like Don Martin (and John Severin and Jerry DeFuccio).
