Don's steel defines the rock-solid country sound in hundreds of legendary recordings with the likes of Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Loretta Lynn, Lefty Frizzell, Ray Price, Johnny Cash and Webb Pierce in addition to countless other top names in country music from the 1940's through the 1990's.
Don was not ready to leave Alabama for Louisiana, but once Hank tore the roof off the Grand Ole Opry with "Lovesick Blues" in 1949, Hank convinced Don to join him in Nashville and the two helped make country music history.
Don's short term goal is to play into the year 2000, where he can pride himself of having recorded in 7 decades, 2 centuries and 2 millennia.

Don Helms was born and raised a few miles south of New Brockton Near Goodman, and Bethany Community.
Don Helms was inducted into the International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in 1984 and won the R.O.P.E. Musician of the Year award in the early 90's.
Don Helms is imitated, lionized, adored and respected by every musician who presumes to play the steel guitar.

Don Helms (born February 28, 1927 is a steel guitarist best know as a member of Hank Williams Drifting Cowboys group.
Born in New Brockton, Alabama, Helms has performed with many Country Music artists throughout the years including playing steel guitar on Lefty Frizzell's recording of "Long Black Veil." During the mid-1960s Helms played in the Wilburn Brothers backup band, The Nashville Tennesseans.
Helms is currently the leader of the touring version of the Drifting Cowboys which is the backing band for Jett Williams.

Helms also accompanied Williams in the late ’40s for his stint on the Hadacol Caravan, a traveling musical variety show across Louisiana and the southeastern United States that touted the virtues of Dudley J. LeBlanc’s Hadacol, a health tonic loaded with 12 percent alcohol.

Don Helms, the only surviving member of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys and a steel guitarist who played with many other legends of country music, returned, even though he is still recovering from a stroke he suffered a few days after taking part in the Old Tyme Country Show at the Liberty last January.
Malpass drove Helms and his wife, Miss Hazel, from Nashville to the Liberty, where, after he belted out the first lines of "Hey Good Lookin'," the audience roared their approval, and Malpass, his hips swiveling, created the kind of excitement that crowds probably experienced the first time they saw Hank himself.

Don has recently switched back to his Gibson Console and put up the pedal guitar.
