  Blog of Death: Don Lawrence
Don Southam Lawrence, one of Europe's most famous comic book illustrators, died on Dec. 29 from pneumonia and emphysema.
Lawrence, who influenced an entire generation of European artists, served two years in the Army then studied art at Borough Polytechnic in London.
Lawrence spent the last 25 years of his life working on the best-selling, 23-volume series, "Storm." An English edition of the series will be published in May.

Don Lawrence, Azusa Pacific's first ever full-time soccer coach, is in his 13th season at the Cougar helm and his 15th as a collegiate soccer coach.
Lawrence began his coaching career in 1968 as the head soccer coach at Nyack (N.Y.) College, where he also served 5 years as the head basketball coach and 2 years as the head coach for baseball, tennis and cross country.
A native of New England, Lawrence was raised in Lancaster, Pa. He was a standout basketball guard at The King's College in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1967.

Don's artwork on this strip was stunning, and won him fans all over Europe where (unknown to him) the strip was reprinted in Graphic Novel form.
Don's Trigan work is a lucky exception and should be sort out, especially by publishers as an example of what level of material was made available for children.

Many fans stood in line for over one hour at the stand were Don Lawrence was signing, to have a chat and to congratulate him with his upcoming 75th birthday.
Don was not a religious man. His youngest son, Kai, later said he imagined Don coughing at various points through the proceedings.
Don was to break down the first album, so as to give his fans that little bit more continuity, and I was to do the finished art.

Don began coaching at Coatesville in 1991 as J.V. pitching coach, and moved up to varsity pitching coach in 1992.

Don Lawrence, who died on Monday aged 75, drew the science fiction comic-strip series "The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire", which is considered one of the finest examples of the genre.
It was first produced by Lawrence and the writer Mike Butterworth for Fleetway Publication's Ranger comic in 1965; then, when Ranger folded after only 40 issues, it appeared in Look and Learn, the educational weekly-cum-comic.
Lawrence had had little interest in comics, but now was attracted by their liveliness and strong story lines.

Don was one of Britain's greatest artists, and prior to Storm was best known for his ground breaking work on The Trigan Empire.
Don didn't know that (and was not paid in accordance with his fandom either) before he met his foreign fandom on a comic conference in 1976, including the publisher of the now gone weekly comic magazine Eppo.
It seems that Storm's days are numbered, Don Lawrence is growing old and would like to end Storm with a final story, probably involving his death, so I read in an interview.

Leading publishers Amalgamated Press rejected his samples in 1954, but when Lawrence approached entrepreneur Mick Anglo's Gower Studios, he was hired on the spot to join a band of freelancers supplying publishers with cheap, ready packages of comic-book stories.
Lawrence could now take the time he needed to craft, in gouache and watercolour, the most imaginative compositions of his career, and to collaborate with Lodewijk in developing each book.
