Don Michael Randel is the twelfth and current president of the University of Chicago.
On July 26, 2005, Randel announced that he would leave the University of Chicago to assume the presidency of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Don Randel grew up in Panama (where his father operated a small business) and then attended Princeton University, where he received bachelor's, M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees in music.
Randel also edited the Harvard Concise Dictionary of Music and Musicians, which was published in 1999.
President Randel's wife, Carol, is an alumna of the University of Michigan, where she majored in mathematics.

Don Michael Randel, the provost of Cornell University, had been elected to the presidency of the University of Chicago only minutes before.
Randel was greeted with smiles as broad as his own on December 13, the day the U of C’s Board of Trustees ratified his nomination as Chicago’s 12th president.
Randel noted that not only was he looking forward to being a part of Chicago’s music department, but also to finding out about everybody’s work, “students and faculty alike.” He and his wife, Carol, are equally excited, he said, about moving to the city of Chicago and taking advantage of its cultural institutions.

Randel has been president of Chicago since 2000; before that, he spent 32 years as a faculty member (in musicology) and administrator at Cornell University, culminating in the provostship there.
It is that deep and broad involvement in academe and with scholarly pursuits that attracted Randel to the job, he said, and led him to decide, after what he described as the “two most difficult weeks of my life,” to accept Mellon’s offer.
Bowen said in an interview Tuesday that he believed Randel’s background as a university professor and president situated him perfectly to manage Mellon — acknowledging a bias, though, since he himself became Mellon’s president in 1988 from a similar background, after years at the helm of Princeton University.

The New York City-based Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has announced the appointment of Don Michael Randel as president of the foundation, effective July 1, 2006.
President of the University of Chicago since 2000, Randel led efforts to strengthen the humanities and arts on campus, was instrumental in further strengthening the university's programs in the physical and biomedical sciences, and initiated a broad range of interactions with the city of Chicago.
He joined the faculty of Cornell University in 1968, where he remained for thirty-two years, serving at various times as chairman of the department of music, vice-provost, and associate dean and dean of the college of arts and sciences.

University President Don Michael Randel hosted Daniel Barenboim, music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), at the International House on Sunday, as the two addressed contemporary critiques of classical music, and the latter spoke on his vision for music in society.
Barenboim noted that one of the great challenges involved with performing the music of Schoenberg is that it is extremely difficult for a musician to rise to the level of “freedom of expression.” Schoenberg himself is known to have acknowledged the technical difficulty of his works, which he considered an obstacle to understanding his music.

Originally launched by the renowned musicologist Willi Apel in 1944, it was completely recommissioned by Don Randel in 1986 from some seventy leading scholars, and comes with 250 music examples and over 200 line drawings of instruments, etc. in the stoutest of cloth bindings.
Surely this indispensable tool needs no introduction; the first two editions, edited by William Apel, have served the music world only too well.
The present volume, prepared by 70 noted scholars under Randel's capable editorship, contains mostly new entries; the scope has been greatly expanded to include better coverage of recent music.
