While humans are busy letting bats roam freely in the dark and primitive portions of our minds, the bats are busy minding their own business and eating mosquitoes and other insects.
That is not necessarily a bad thing, according to Pease, who noted that just because a bat decides to live in your house doesn't mean you have to worry.
"Animals either have rabies or they don't," Pease said, adding that fewer than one half of 1 percent of bats have rabies, much lower than cats and dogs, which can be infected at a rate of 2 percent or 3 percent.

PEP, which stands for "personal exemption phase-out," and Pease, named after former Rep. Don Pease (D-OH), were tax increases enacted in the 1990's as part of a true deficit reduction package, and are now being phased out through 2010.
Along with PEP and Pease, President Bush is prepared to take his tax-cutting mania even further, commenting on Jan. 7 on his plans to push for making his 2001 and 2003 tax cuts--which cost roughly $1.7 trillion over ten years--permanent that:

Pease was able to get rid of them with a few references to “John of Patmos,” which most listeners probably wouldn't have recognized.
And, full of bluster and bombast and charisma, he began to explicate, in passionate detail, every element of the scene in the film that wasn't in the book, the scene that Maclean hadn't written, that Maclean hadn't had anything to do with, because by the time the film was made, Maclean was dead.

According to Pease, who has held the Ted and Helen Geisel Chair in the Humanities, Seuss would have much to say about the political climate of the 21st century.
Geisel was, after all, "gripped by the Biblical injunction, 'Be not afraid,'" said Pease, and writing during World War II rendered impossible a retreat from the political.
