Don Pedro Dam is located on the Tuolumne River, 40 miles east of Modesto, California.
New Don Pedro Dam was completed in May of 1971, and the new powerhouse could generate up to 165 megawatts of electricity by utilizing three "Francis" type hydroelectric turbine generators.
Each year the Don Pedro dam releases water into Tuolumne River and roughly after 2 miles, at the La Grange Dam approximately 885,000 acre-feet of water is diverted to the MID and TID main canals.

Although Secretary Hodel's proposal to tear down the O'Shaughnessy Dam was not the first suggestion that this be done, it came from higher authority than any other.
Don Pedro Dam could have been built in the first place, and a major scenic resource could have been retained, lakeless and beautiful.
In summary, Auburn Dam and the Peripheral Canal are not needed to substitute for Hetch Hetchy Valley's storage.

I've been going to Pedro my whole life and have seen it in all states of water level, so maybe I just know where the rocks and shallow spots are, but I'd love to have the heads up.
Even most of the ones that were natural have had a small extension dam built up on the output so that they can store water as a reservoir.
At least Lake Don Pedro has clear enough water that you have a chance to see a hazard just below the water surface.
