  Jelly review: Don Pullen
It is fitting that in Don Pullen's final complete recording he leaves us with a unique combination of multicultural sounds representing the culmination of his life in music.
Pullen's paternal grandmother was half-Indian, but he hadn't heard live Native American music until 1992.
Pullen was diagnosed with lymphoma about one-third of the way through this project and was well into chemotherapy at the time of the recording, yet the compositions and his performance show all the vitality and energy of his earlier work.

Pullen was born (on 25th December 1941, not in 1944 as sometimes said) and raised in Roanoke, Virginia.
Pullen's final project was a work combining the music of his African Brazilian Connection (extended by Joseph Bowie on trombone) with a choir and drums of Native Americans.
Don Pullen, like many other of greatest jazz musicians, had given his life to the music and was greatly missed after his death.

The History of Jazz Music. Don Pullen: biography, discography, review, links
Virginia-born pianist Don Pullen (1941), who, after playing briefly in Chicago in Muhal Richard Abrams' Experimental Band, moved to New York in 1964, was one of the musicians who bridged blues and free-jazz piano.
Pullen then jumped from the free-jazz generation straight onto the "creative" generation, working with David Murray (1976-77), Hamiet Bluiett (1977-80) and Joseph Jarman (1979).
Pullen, tenorist and flutist George Adams, bassist David Williams and drummer Dannie Richmond formed a quartet that debuted on Jazz A Confronto (march 1975), with Pullen's Calypso In Roma and Traceys Of Daniel, and then was hijacked by Adams for his Suite For Swingers (july 1976).

 Don Pullen: A Song Everlasting
Despite his determination to perpetuate the swinging tradition, Pullen was often wrongly pigeonholed by those who only knew of his early work, and believed him locked in the sixties mould; his playing style, to his chagrin, was often compared to, and said to have been influenced by, Cecil Taylor, despite Don's frequent denials.
Pullen's commitment to swing was exemplified by his playing solo concerts with a number of small bells around one ankle, like a Morris dancer's rig, to provide extra tinkling rhythms as he stamped his foot.
Perhaps Pullen's solo piano work, covering the full range of his playing from 'inside' to 'outside', is not the place for a first look into the wonderful body of work left behind by this outstanding musician.

What I See When I Hear Don Pullen
The first is that of a sweet-faced toddler, her eyes opened wide in a state of wonder, her mouth open, too, halfway to a smile.
Pullen begins throwing down a series of ferocious righthand clusters -- one of his trademarks -- when, shockingly, he dislocates a finger.
With Don, form and structure were typically under assault yet there was beauty to behold in every single note he played.

I was not aware then that Don too had a terminal illness and he has also passed on.

Hit play on just about any Don Pullen record and three things will strike you right away: his fierceness of spirit, deep respect for melody, and a barely-restrained urge to out-and-out make some noise.
Pullen worked in the '60s with Giuseppi Logan and Milford Graves, but he reached more substantial audiences when he joined up with Charles Mingus from 1973-75.
Pullen's own projects continued in parallel and therafter, reaching a high point in the form of his thrice-recorded African Brazilian Connection, until he died of cancer in 1995.

Although he could be quite free harmonically, with dense, dissonant chords, Pullen also utilized catchy rhythms, so even his freest flights generally had a handle for listeners to hang on to.
Pullen, who came from a musical family, studied with Muhal Richard Abrams (with whom he played in the Experimental Band) and, in 1964, made his recording debut with Giuseppi Logan.

Pullen's organ solos moved in expansive arcs, gathering momentum to leap from be-bop into unfettered swoops and swirls - similar to his piano solos in the George Adams-Don Pullen quartet, but making full use of the heft and reediness of organ tone.

Review/Music; Don Pullen's Pianism - New York Times
It wasn't until the end of the pianist Don Pullen's last tune of his first set at the Village Vanguard on Tuesday night that it became clear how unusual his compositional ideas are.
Pullen is also a virtuosic improviser, borrowing liberally from the European classical tradition, from jazz and blues and from pop music.
Pullen, backed by Santi Dibriano on bass and Ben Riley on drums, stuck almost exclusively to hammered clusters, rolling the back of his hands on the keys or dropping his forearms on the piano.

A rare meeting of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the late pianist Don Pullen -- recorded at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in 1991, and easily one of the group's greatest sessions from this period!
Pullen delivers a strong pulse on the latter track especially -- and continues into a straighter, soaring jazz groove on "Odwalla/The Theme", which closes the set.

In later years, Pullen led his African-Brazilian Connection and recorded with Kip Hanrahan, Roots, John Scofield, David Murray, Mingus Dynasty, and Jane Bunnett, among others.

Jazzmatazz Review - Don Pullen - Solo Piano Album
Pullen put together a varied program on this album, making use of his background in blues and RandB as well as in the avant-garde.
The piece emphasizes his two-handed playing (a few times each hand seemed to be playing in a separate style) and features long lines consisting of fast runs of notes and tone clusters.
This, Pullen's first solo album, is an important work, and I'm glad it's finally available on CD.

Amazon.com: Evidence of Things Unseen: Music: Don Pullen   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Don Pullen was under-recorded in his too-short career and life, and there are only a few solo albums to be found (the others being "Healing Force" on Black Saint and the earlier "Solo Piano Record" on the Sackville label).
The first three are characteristic Pullen originals in which he first states a melody and then eventually builds to the Pullen-treatment with clusters, runs, and tinkling glissandi.
The album is a joy and definitely worthy of 5 stars, though I personally tend to prefer Pullen's ensemble work (see "New Beginnings," "Random Thoughts," or the George Adams quartet) to his solo albums.

Special highlights are Pullen's "Song From the Old Country," Adams's "A Time for Sobriety" and "Serenade to Sariah," and Pullen's brilliant "Sing Me a Song Everlasting." The other two sides here are trio dates recorded for Blue Note.
New Beginnings, issued in 1988, featured bassist Gary Peacock and Tony Williams, and Random Thoughts, issued in 1990, placed Pullen in the company of James Genus on bass and Lewis Nash on drums.
While the name recognition on New Beginnings is high, the performances are inconsistent, largely because Pullen was trying to juxtapose a more groove-oriented piano trio approach against the outside nature of his '60s playing.

Don Pullen : Breakthrough - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Yes, this is a career breakthrough in a sense, for the Don Pullen/George Adams Quartet finally got a chance to record for a major American label after several Europe-only opuses.
While grounded in hard-swinging post-bop, soul-jazz, and the blues, Adams and Pullen use the mainstream as a base for taking off into free regions at times, Adams with his gritty, combustible tenor, Pullen his trademark piano clusters.
They can also groove in a melodic yet highly charged fashion on "Song From the Old Country" and reflect yearningly in the opening bars of "A Time for Sobriety." Drummer Dannie Richmond adds his Mingus-trained flexibility and drive, fluidly teamed with bassist Cameron Brown.

This one has all the verve that characterized the best of The George Adams-don Pullen Quartet's albums, without pandering to the commercialism that some of these recordings exuded.
The requisite spiritual, "The Eye Is on the Sparrow," is typically lush and gorgeously sensuous, while the other pieces are all originals by either Pullen or Adams.
If some of the energy of the best of the Quartet is occasionally lacking, there is still enough joyous vigor to appeal to enthusiasts of the group.

D.D. Jackson: Reviews, Discography, Audio Clips, and more ||| Music.com
This solo recording for the Canadian pianist is dedicated to his many classical and jazz influences in quite the manner of his mentor, the late Don Pullen.
Jackson's style closely emulates that of his mentor, the late Don Pullen, sometimes featuring clusters of dissonant notes played in rhythmic fashion which makes his music seem fairly accessible despite its unpredictable nature.
On his debut as a leader, 27-year-old pianist D.D. Jackson often plays overcrowded chords in catchy rhythmic phrases that are very reminiscent of the late great pianist Don Pullen, although on some of the slower pieces he shows more originality.
