 Strauss, Richard on Encyclopedia.com
These works—including Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (1895); Thus Spake Zarathustra (1895), after Nietszche; Don Quixote (1898), a tone poem in the form of variations with a cello solo; and A Hero's Life (1898)—were violently both lauded and damned as the very essence of musical modernism.
Strauss brought to a culmination the development of the 19th-century symphonic poem, and was a leading composer of romantic opera in the early 20th cent.
Strauss served briefly as head of musical affairs (Reichsmusikkammer president) under the Nazis; he was officially exonerated of collaboration in 1948.

 Richard Strauss
Set as a series of variations ("ad absurdum," he was later to say), Strauss tells this story of the idealistic Don Quixote and his doomed quests.
Here, Strauss abandons any pretense of musical pictorialism, and turns the orchestra's winds into flutter-tonguing noise-makers to depict the sheep.
Strauss wrote that his intent in this piece was "to convey in music the idea of the development of mankind.

 Classical Net Review - Rossini/Strauss/Beethoven - Cenerentola/Don Quixote/Symphony #5
Richard Strauss's 'Don Quixote' is a work that did not feature so often in Toscanini programmes but this performance with Feuermann and Cooley is definitely out of the top drawer.
At 38 minutes, it must be one of the fastest Don Quixote's ever, quite an interesting contrast with Krauss and Fournier on their legendary 1953 recording.
Toscanini's tempi are almost manically fast but the excitement that he manages to whip up is quite magical.

Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Op. 28
One of the most substantial, Don Quixote, is laid out as a set of expansive variations in which the solo cello has a role of such prominence that all virtuosi of that instrument include the work among the concertos in their repertoires.
For Till Eulenspiegel, which is both the shortest work in the series and the most ingratiating (though its early audiences didn't always find it so), Strauss chose the appropriately good-natured form of the rondo and labeled the piece as such, adding, on the title page, “in the old-style roguish manner.”

 Guardian NYO/Tortelier
Strauss's Don Quixote and Sibelius's Symphony No 2 are megaliths of the late romantic repertoire; would any professional band have the stamina, the enthusiasm, or even the naivety to tackle both in a single evening?
Tortelier elucidates a more streamlined sound, particularly from the strings, which snap into focus following the hazy impressionism of the Strauss.
By some perverse logic, while the standard of music teaching in schools continues to decline, the quality of the NYO seems greater than ever, although the ensemble does exist in order to develop the cream of young instrumental talent.

``Don Quixote'' is an odd hybrid, part splashy symphonic poem, part cello concerto.
This string of symphonic poems ends with the ``Symphonia Domestica.'' It describes a day in the Strauss household, with a theme for each of the family members, a rapturous love scene, and a domestic squabble in the form of a double fugue.
Strauss' symphonic poems had been so tied to literature that they were almost operas without words.

 Boston.com / A&E / Music / Cellist, fortepianist make Beethoven sonatas sing
The British cellist Steven Isserlis has been an occasional visitor to Boston and to Tanglewood, and in February he returns to Symphony Hall to join the Boston Symphony Orchestra to play Strauss's "Don Quixote" under Rafael Fruehbeck de Burgos.
But there is nothing childlike about his playing, which is both earthy and sophisticated -- earthy in that he goes for essentials and doesn't try to sound pretty all the time, sophisticated in his musical intelligence and his technical approach.
But the alert eye of the Gardner Museum's music director, Scott Nickrenz, noticed Isserlis hadn't played a recital here before, so Nickrenz organized a two-concert survey of the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas with fortepianist Robert Levin that began yesterday afternoon.
