Rendell's characters often live on the margins - of society and sanity - and a constant theme is how communities assimilate those who have lost their way, and how they manage the quiet threat they can pose.
Rendell cannot abide unfairness, and she combines this with a high-minded and proactive sense of responsibility.
Rendell was made a Labour peer in 1997 and she thrives on her work in the House of Lords, where she has spoken in support of the homeless and gay rights.

 Don Rendell - Jazz Monthly...
Don has sought conducive musical surroundings for some years; he is not likely to remain in a band once he finds himself at variance with the musical policy.
Rendell and the remnants of his band were taken into the ranks of Tony Crombie's orchestra, which gave Don a much needed breathing-space from the responsibilities he had been shouldering.
Don and his men believe that the public has a right to expect musical efficiency from jazz musicians as well as the obvious qualities of swing, excitement and melody.

Rendell stands exposed in line with conventional U.S. tenorists in his approach; Bond belongs to the wilder, few-holds-barred school of playing.

Rendell, then dark-haired, opened the door and let me in; moments later, she looked at me with an expression of shock, as if she had just woken from a dream, or as if I were an intruder.
Rendell, with her modern fl shoulder bag and youngish clothes, might, from any distance, be a woman entering, rather than leaving, middle age.
(Don Rendell died earlier this year, of cancer.) Her only son is a social worker living in Colorado; in his professional capacity he dealt with the aftermath of the Columbine High School shootings.

 Arts | Don Rendell
The appeal of Rendell's playing is closely tied to his longevity as a player: his roots in the work of Lester Young are always apparent on tenor sax, but his early fascination with John Coltrane is audible too.
Rendell's work also occasionally suggests visits to world music, with the soprano saxophone sometimes taking on the characteristics of a north African or oriental instrument.
The Young connection was made explicit in Rendell's original Spotlight on Pres, with the saxophonist's blearily epigrammatic solo barely visiting the tune and his timing constantly challenging the beat.

Ian Carr is the same, a perfect partner for Don, with a dazzling technique.
He is listed on the cover as only playing flugelhorn, but he plays in a tin mute on one number, so unless he's using a trombone mute in the flugelhorn he's on trumpet, too.
Rendell's own composition, Garrison '64, perhaps a reminder of when he was in the French Foreign Legion (just kidding) has a frisky melody line rather like a call.

Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet: Change Is
The duo are key collaborators on the crucially important Integration and Greek Variations albums reissued by Universal/Impressed, while the wonderfully eclectic web-based reissue label BGO has released five of the Rendell/Carr Quintet's albums and all of Carr's albums with Nucleus.
Recorded in '69, it is the last album recorded by the Quintet before the two leaders went their mostly separate ways, Carr to form Nucleus and Rendell to lead his own, less feted but equally exciting, two saxes/pianoless Quartet.
Given its position in the end-of-one-era/start-of-another development of Rendell's and Carr's music, Change Is is a remarkably cohesive work, wholly enduring and richly enjoyable, and it's a joy to have it back.

It's a raucous, sweaty, at times honking and screaming ruckus of hard bop, laced with jump jive and blues roots—and it's as enjoyable today as it must have been forty something years ago.
Recorded in '61, the album catches Don Rendell, aged 35, returning to the scene after a year or so's absence, secure in the style which would help make the quintet he later co-led with Ian Carr such a consistently exciting force in British jazz.
Personnel: Don Rendell, tenor saxophone; Graham Bond, alto saxophone; John Burch, piano; Tony Archer, bass; Phil Kinorra, drums.

Bond's scalding alto and Rendell's more considered tenor made a wonderful team, particularly in their passages of unaccompanied contrapuntal improvisations, while the underrated pianist and composer John Burch is given a rare showcase.
Even now, Bond's funky choruses on Blue Monk are enough to raise the hairs on the back of the neck.
