 Just Left: February 2005
Katherine Rich's departure from National's front bench has left it an all-male line-up – and adds to the tally of female casualties of Don Brash's leadership style.
Katherine Rich's demotion from social services spokeswoman yesterday not only overshadowed the opening salvos in Parliament, it raised grave questions about Don Brash's leadership style.
Despite National once again indulging its standard preference for target practice - shooting itself in the foot - the party's election prospects should not suffer lasting damage from Don Brash sacking his welfare spokeswoman, Katherine Rich, and dumping her from his front bench.

Rich Lowry is editor of National Review, a Townhall.com member group, and author of Legacy: Paying the Price for the Clinton Years.
There were two lessons for the United States from Somalia: (1) Don't send U.S. troops somewhere unless it's truly important; (2) don't let setbacks scare you into retreat.
The comparisons to the "Black Hawk Down" battle in Somalia in October 1993 are unavoidable, from the enemies' tactic (shoot for the tail rotor), to the celebrations of the natives on the ground, to the heartbreaking death toll (18 in Somalia, 16 now).

Rich: I think for a long time I believed that there would be political solutions because, growing up in America, you endure several political campaigns and these people make promises and they say, we will do this and we will do that and you believe them because you don't know any better.
Rich: Yeah and especially in a day when so much emphasis and so much pressure is put on us to esteem ourselves I kind of go, wow, I don't know how anyone can wake up with morning breath and pillow head and feel any self esteem.
Rich: I think the big problem is that, as Christians, we forgot that our identity is wrapped up in Christ and for a long time we bought into the illusion that the will of the masses would be more generous and more benevolent than the will of one dictator.

Don Brash — tax cuts for the rich, benefit cuts for the poor - Green Party
Dr Brash is right about one thing — we do have around 300,000 people unemployed and a lot more should be done about it — but the solution isn’t stopping the unemployed benefit or imposing workfare — rather it lies in creating real jobs at real wages for all who need them.
Subsequent comments on welfare reform from Dr Brash reveal a slight retraction from this position, possibly through the efforts of his colleague Katherine Rich who does actually have some real understanding of her social services portfolio.
We in the Green Party cannot remain unmoved by last week’s ascension of Don Brash to the leadership of the National Party.

danieldrezner.com :: Daniel W. Drezner :: Defending the idle rich?
Call me a cynic, but in the case of the idle rich, I don't see anything besides a lavish lifestyle from the efforts of their betters, followed by breeding another generation of vacuous nitwits to carry on the tradition.
Also don't forget the most critically acclaimed show of the new season which starts Sunday, Arrested Development, which seems to get much of its humor from making fun of the idle rich.
The concept of the idle rich is pernicious not because they are rich but that they neither "earn" it, are "worthy" of it, and generally squander the potential inherent within the Capital.

Although no one has gotten rich off blogs in the West, which usually rely on advertising for revenue, China has the additional benefit that its consumers are accustomed to paying for news sent to their mobile phones.

Indeed, he spent so much that very soon there was none left, and Don Giovanni, instead of being a rich man with everything he could wish for, was forced to put on the dress of a pilgrim, and to wander from place to place begging his bread.
Then the Don went to an inn, where he hired two rooms, and, standing in one of them, said to his purse, ‘ Dear purse, fill this room with gold;’ and when the eight days were up it was so full you could not have put in another sovereign.
And he was rich and happy to the end of his days, for he loved his wife, and his purse always gave him money.
